Didn’t want Coutinho at Everton, but I am worried he will be a real success at Villa with Gerrard.

Let’s hope he becomes an expensive mistake.

Rafael said in the summer before joining us that he wanted a club with a young squad that he could coach and take to the next level, he didn't want an ageing squad. He spoke about having a few players of experience who could offer that balance though.

He said he is a coach first and a manager after and that's where he's at his best on the training ground.

He also spoke a lot about homegrown players and how it's important to fill whichever team he manages with these kinds of players.

He also chats a whole lot of absolute crap as well but you just keep the good bits in

Some players will play well for some clubs. Coutinho probably will do alright at Villa, he’ll be motivated under his mate Gerrard. He just wouldn’t have had that motivation for us and would have become a drain on wages.

Signing someone like Coutinho on a short-term loan wouldn't have bad business in the short term but I don’t think he fits what we need. We need athletic players who can cover ground and travel with the ball forward but he’ll do well at Villa if he stays fit because he’ll play off the left where Grealish played, and where his best form that lot was and he’ll have legs around him doing all the running. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player and we should always be able to find room in our team for talent but I think we need something different.

I’ve said before if it was between Coutinho and Barkley then I’d have Barkley back. I mean, in an ideal world we wouldn’t be linked with either and we’d be aiming for young talent but if you put a gun to my head and said we could take one of these two on loan then yeah, it would be the Rat.

The one thing I'm pleased with under Benitez so far is the profile of player we're being linked with.

We've been so short-term for so long. I hope this trend continues.
like longstaff, and that balloon we have up front Rondon.... lukewarm at best in my view (though tbf the full backs i like!)
