Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

Agreed I said this this morning also. Beto is a completely different type of striker to DCL so the system has to be tweaked. That means playing a midfielder behind him who can thread balls for him to run on to. That player is Harrison Armstrong. We need to get over the phobia of not “risking” youngsters. He’s the only midfielder we currently have who can play those type of through balls. Anyone who watches the U21’s have seen him do it regularly, and he showed it again against Peterborough in the cup. He has vision, and can play. Doucoure, can’t. Absolutely pointless pumping balls up either from deep, or wide areas for Beto because despite his size, that just isn’t his game. Has to be Beto up top, Nidiaye, Armstrong and Lindstrom behind him.
Jimmy Garner could play those through balls

So we brought in an injured player, covered for the months long injury being worked through, and still made absolutely no contingency for if the got re-injured? Knowing his already abysmal record? Even worse, a season long loan you get 5 games out of

Presumably Ipswich wanted that clause so they accepted our offer which didn’t include it?

He did put in an injury clause, at the start of the contract. Cant imagine many teams loaning a known injury prone player out and saying the other club doesn’t pay anything in the event of an injury at any point in the contract.

Not saying Kev isn’t a tit for bringing in a player this fragile when we have a regularly injured Dom, a chronically injured Chermiti, and a persistently random Beto. It could have worked out brilliantly. It has failed spectacularly. He gambled and lost. But don’t think he could have done more on the contract. The solution was to stay well clear (and I think if fit, Broja could be fantastic - but he never is).

We’ve been fixated on this lad for years. It’s weird.
I disagree with this fundamentally I’m afraid. Watched him for Chelsea, Saints, Fulham and Albania. He is NOWHERE near aggressive enough for the role he plays and what his frame could take advantage of. I recall Thelwell using advanced stats to compare with Richarlison to justify Broja as the potential replacement when he left. Whilst almost every advanced metric was extremely similar, the goal output was not close. Furthermore, the mental intangibles that Richarlison had in spades, Broja sorely lacked. No snide, no aggression, no selfishness. He’s too big to be a rapid, clinical forward but doesn’t have the minerals to be a nightmare to deal with target man. He fails to do either, there is no surprised he’s never kicked on. Nice lad, I just don’t see the vision with him as a main striker. And none of that takes into account his truly woeful availability.

Only thing is I couldn't see Moyes playing Armstrong for the rest of the season.

They are many reasons why we are quiet this window:

Takeover
No CEO in place
Manager Change
Uncertainty over DOF
FFP Uncertainty
January traditionally a difficult window

I also think given our recent form should we beat Leicester on Saturday, we move 9 points away from them, that a decision to prioritise summer transfers.

Obviously I think we have to find out more on DCL, Broja and Mangala but we have Garner return, Tim and Coleman to come back.

If we could find a key spot who would impact now and improve the squad but save us finding a spot in the summer.

I love the ideas of McAfee and Jonathan David who would be a star signing plus a real statement but sadly we aren't in the position to pull those players of real quality into the club.

Definately if moyes has taken over thats him gone
Even if Thelwell does go he will be replaced. The backseat nature of how TFG seem to operate mean that there will always be someone in that role, you can argue all day about what you want to call it, DoF, Sporting Director, Technical Director, hell Man Utd have all 3 roles on the go!! My point is that Moyes will never have the run of things like he did under Kenwright, clubs just don't operate like that anymore.

And what if they beat us and narrow it to 3 points and Wolves beat Villa this weekend and narrow their gap to 4?

In any case, it wouldn't be a great idea to do nothing even if we win. The three games so far under Moyes we lost against a mediocre Villa, beat a second string Spurs who aren't even playing for their manager and were dominated most of the game by Brighton while we offered hardly any threat.

We cant be making it a virtue to sign no players when we've just lost 2 in one game and when we needed 2 before they got injured.

Theres Villa’s recruitment. Several top quality deals already done.
Then theres Everton and Telliwell. No deals and stuck with a croc because Thelltit forgot to put an injury clause in the loan deal for Broja.
Contrast and compare.
Villa have done a lot right in the past 3/4 years when it comes to player trading, but there was a piece on SSN earlier claiming that their annual salary bill [presumably for the 23/24 season] is 96% of their earnings. Champions League appearances will undoubtedly help for this season, but it doesn't feel very sustainable.
