Everton January 2025 Transfer Thread

I am usually very pessimistic about everything surrounding Everton (not by choice may I add) but I think we will get 2 in before the window closes
Our ability to close out signings has decreased closely in tandem with our ever disimproved final league positions. Who’d have thought that could happen.

The table shouldn't be a factor in our transfer strategy. We need to strengthen the squad to help move us forward regardless of whether or not we won the last couple of games.

But I do think it could be a factor for the club. I doubt they ever expected to get to the last day of the month, 3 days from the deadline, still yet to bring in a single player. The only thing that has changed is back to back wins which few of us would have predicted.

Moyes said he wanted 2 or 3. I don't know if that's even realistic now and would be surprised if we get more than 1.

And if we don't end up strengthening the squad then the question will be who was to blame? And I honestly have no idea.

Let's hope for a couple of decent players in over the weekend, because we are going to need them.

Moyes this afternoon: "Wor working flat out; but you know this has been a slow market for every club. It's a tough ask to buy quality for value - especially in January. We're hopeful wor can bring a face in mebees to add a wee bit of back up to the first team squad".

You know it.

David Moyes: standing guard over Everton owners since 2002.
He's never 'wee' in an interview EVER.

Why is the default to be "spending badly"

It's a nonsense, apologetic defence.

Sign players who improve the team or heaven forbid, allow some depth.

That isn't asking much.

And your last sentence isn't accurate, as much as the Sky Sports type agenda would love to have you believe. The stadium, previous board and Russia's war got us into the current situation. Sure, one window under Koeman we spent a bit of money. Like Fulham, Bournemouth and West Ham have since. And nowhere near the amounts Nottingham or Villa have.

Teams spend money, teams invest money into the playing squad - we haven't. The only team to not have done the last 4 years.

Our squad value for fees, including players we have on loan who we didnt actually spend is 19th from 20th. I think Ipswich actually went above us this window. [Edit. They haven't. Our squad cost is 19th in the league, above only Ipswich.]
Agreed, then we have the wrong people in place to make these decisions.

There are some signings that might 'fail' but if they are the right age and the salary isnt high (Above their ability) then shipping them out or getting your money back should be an issue.

Every player has some risk, no player bounces from club to club with the same form and injury record.

Doing stuff at the end of January IMO should only be real emergencies, ie a long term injury to one of your key players.
For me the January stuff should be done early because one player could be the difference between 7-8 points in January or 1 point.

7 points clear.

If we lost the last 2, you still don't sign players who don't improve us long term.

Again, why is the default that we'd sign terrible players?

The crux of it is this team needs players now, as much as it ever has.

You say the last 2 games has undoubtedly changed our situation - a squad already on it's arse, has lost two first team players in Calvert-Lewin and Mangala in that time

Sure, we could be 10 points clear tomorrow, or 4 points with 40% of the season to go.

A team that's been in a relegation scrap for 3 successive years is in one until it's not.
We've also got a massive overhaul to do this summer. So getting a couple of places in the squad sorted now would help.

I'll sum our situation up simply, IF we go with what we have and anything happens to Ndiaye we are screwed massively he's the only source of goals and player who can get us on the front foot.
We are one injury from having to play a 18yo lad in CM.
We are an injury away from having no striker and have nobody to shift there without ending up with no one playing their position.

Any of those or several happens and we could easily go into a spiral down.

And things like to see toffee TV almost crowing about if we beat Leicester we are safe pretty much, will be the first screaming about how we got let down in the window should the worse happen.

Jesus wept.
