Everton January transfer window 2021

Like in 08 or 07 January sitting 4th didn't sign anyone and fell out of European places.

That's just one, I could go on and on though.
There’s no guarantee that signing an overpriced and likely plan B player in January can be the difference. Everything derives from good squad building during the summer which we are admittedly pretty good at leaving ourselves short at

Signing a good first team right back in January could make all the difference though. Plenty of sides strengthen during January, just not us, ever.

Oh for sure if a first team right back who has a decent future with us is available chuck cash at them, sod the premium

We've been doing "overpriced and likely plan B" signings in the Summer windows for years now tho.

In the last winter window many clubs did business that they're definitely still seeing the benefits from; Bruno Fernandes, Tariq Lamptey, Soucek, Podence, Berge and Walker-Peters have all added quality to their sides (the first 3 in that list are all arguably the most important player at their clubs).

There's deffo business to be done this window, especially given clubs' need for income during these times. The league is as wide open as I've ever seen it and the rewards available (Champions League football for example) would justify taking a risk or two.

Whether they’ve strengthened the team or not is another question but we have made use of the Jan transfer windows in the past. Just a few seasons back we spent 50 mill on Tosun and Walcott (a huge waste I know but we still committed the cash). Schneiderlin and Lookman were Jan signings, Jelavic and Gibson, even all the way back to Arteta . Admittedly Brands has been more reactant to use the window.

The annoying one for me was 13/14. We got Lacina Traore on loan. Had he stayed fit we might have had enough for fourth but he played a couple of games then we never saw him again.

Well there's never a guarantee is there, whenever you sign them. It's not about just chucking money at players you don't really want, that's madness, but it would be disappointing if we haven't identified a single player who would be available to improve us in this window, considering how short we are in some areas. There really is an almost unprecedented opportunity to make a splash this season, it would be a shame if we let it go with a whimper.

All very valid however last January we’d only just appointed Ancelotti who obviously wouldn’t have had time to evaluate the squad or work out a plan to take the club forward. It was also pre pandemic and FFP thing was a very real thing that we were close to breaching.

Also looking at other clubs signings in hindsight is great but we’d never have got Fernandes and who had actually heard of Soucek, Lamptey or Podence? Walker-Pieters wasn’t particularly rated and Berge is now part of what is currently the worst PL team ever at this point.

I’m obviously not saying we shouldn’t add, I’m saying it’s less likely to get value and more importantly the correct player in January and we should be doing the good work in the summer. Also as @Saint Domingo posted above, we have made use of January in the past so for people to say we haven’t is a bit off the Mark.

Oh is he? I haven't seen him coming through so maybe thats his natural position. He was definitely playing left back for United last season, and he looked left footed, but I'm only basing it off 4/5 senior games i saw so maybe he was just filling in.
Apparently he's right footed, but has been playing mostly left-back. So yeah maybe just filling in.

Two at least positions we are short in and it's been obvious for a while,Brands should have had at least one player lined up. I'd imagine for DCL they are looking at Richarlison through the middle and they are keeping fingers crossed that Allan is back within a couple of weeks more, but a high risk strategy.

That’s the point though isn’t it? The proof is that there are players out there that won’t cost the earth and will improve us, we just need efficient scouting to find them.
