Still smashing that ambition I see
Yes still smashing the realism
We need 4 -5 top quality first team players ,say 180-200m to compete at the very top
That will cost big money because Carlo will want the best available
Does not leave us with the option to spend half that again on squad players to fill the gaps left by Gomes ,Siggy etc leaving
In a perfect world with no FPP and Uzzy flexing his wallet . the ambition would be be to keep 6-7 of the current first team squad and buy 16-17 replacements
However realism says otherwise

I don’t think there is any FFP at the minute or it’s been relaxed for a year or two. And maybe it will go for good.

its wages holding us back, so why give another deal to a player already on high wage, approaching 32. Who struggles to make our best 11 now. And will surely be further down the pecking order come the start of next season. A wage that definitely could be put to better use

Because to replace him as a squad player would cost 20m ,same for Gomes
That 40m buys you a first 11 player
FPP has been relaxed but by how much no one seems to know and while it has been relaxed it has not gone away
If it was capable of being done do you think Moshiri would refuse to sanction Carlo spending 50-60 m ,no way would he refuse
Maybe the extension would be for half the 100k
Siggy knows no one is paying a 33 yr old 100k a week unless you are exceptional

There's very little moves being done this window. I mean year on year spend we are down to about 1/8 of last winters spend. When you factor in in 2017 there was 500m+ spent, it's about 1/18 or so of that level of spending. There's wider trends here, that sides have just moved away from those sort of deals, but I do think the pandemic has and the impending financial pressures are starting to squeeze now.

I would say a lot of football, had the view everything would be ok by Christmas. That was what pretty much anyone working in the industry said to me; "fine by christmas". There was a belief all fans would be back. Tht essentially no fans were back by Christmas, and likely no fans will be back this season will be a killer. There's a chance no pre-season tours will be allowed next year as well, so lots of lucrative money lost. Thats before you get into commercial spend from sponsors and merchandising spend.

The one counter I'd add though, is I wonder if we will see a bit of a bonanza in the last 2 days as people blink a bit? Lots of loans being agreed? I don't know. The quarantine rules for 2 weeks don't help, but maybe that comes into the thinking?

can anyone with any sense really see loads of clubs spending millions and bringing in players from all over the globe, moving their families to other countries or even cities in the UK during a global pandemic? What on earth is wrong with people moaning about a lack of ambition?

Not ideal but can we afford to spend 20 m on a replacement squad player when the first 11 needs MAJOR surgery
In an ideal world or on FIFA maybe ,not in the real world though

By the time his contract expires in 18 months time we will probably have sorted the first 11 though. He’s not out of contract this summer.

And because there is no transfer fee, or agents fees etc associated to it, and the likelihood is Gylfis wages demands come down quite substantially. Depending on the market, you may get him to drop them by 25-30%. He knows the squad, there is no integration period.

If he falls off a cliff over the next 18 months, then you have another look. If he continues to play at the level he has been this season though, he may well get another season, and it gets reviewed on a year by year basis. Probably on an incentivised basis with gradually reducing basic wage.
