All quiet at Everton

Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer

Waiting on confirmation of two loan outgoings at Everton, namely Jonjoe Kenny completing his move to Celtic and Cenk Tosun returning to Turkey with his former club Besiktas.
It's all gone quiet, so far today at least, on Brazil forward Bernard's proposed move to Al-Nasr in the UAE.
Bernard looked on the way out of Goodison Park when, along with Tosun, he was not even named on the substitutes' bench for the home defeat to Newcastle United.
If Bernard does not move, will that impact on any plans Everton have to bring in another forward?
With Moise Kean on loan at Paris St. Germain and now Tosun off to Besiktas, it leaves manager Carlo Ancelotti very light in that area and increases the workload on Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, who is having a very indifferent season.
If Bernard goes, it may spark something into life with an incoming.

Until Bernard is basically done we can’t kick on hence why it’s been quiet then?

Well simple answer is Richie get you're finger out. But come on Phil it is is more than just about one position. It is about the whole team being fir and playing together. Leave out Coleman, Siggy, Davies. Stick to B4 of Holgate, Keane, Mina and Godfrey. Iwobi with Holagte behind him will be much better. In the middle not long now Allan back until then choose between Doucoure and Gomes. Use Digne in middle with Hamez and then DCl and Rchie up front.
That's easier said than done though isn't it, while completely ignoring the point that if DCL is injured Richarlison goes up front, who will play wide?

Bernard is looking likely to leave, so you're then reliant on Gordon, Digne pushed forward or someone completely out of position - round peg, square holes.

What if one is suspended (Richarlison isn't beyond a sending off) and one injured or God forbid both injured? With little rest, this isn't an unlikely scenario.

We're already short in other key positions across the midfield, so we could be without any forward players and an ad-hoc, diminished and restricted midfield.

That's before even considering how we're limited to one-dimensional tactics if we don't have the option to rotate, amend our formation and mix things up.

Tosun is far from what we need, however I'm completely baffled by our decision to let him go unless we bring someone in. Perhaps, it highlights our finances!

We don't have a midfield that contributes lots of goals therefore we have to rely on our forward line, and they're current misfiring too.

Tosun came on several times this season and bearly kicked the ball, let alone looking like scoring
If you read my post again you'll see I was acknowledging that Tosun lacks quality. But at least he was an option. Bernard and Tosun may not be the quality that we need, but they have shown in the past that they can offer something at this level, albeit limited and very inconsistently. We saw at the weekend a prime example of them not being on the bench. None of Iwobi, DCL or Richy were performing, and James was knackered after the hour. But we were unable to make a single change and even try to affect the situation, and we actually ended up conceding again. That's what we have to look forward to for the rest of the season.

We can’t possibly go the rest of the season with only one striker.

Same regarding Tosun. Absolutely crap but look at the Rotherham game as an example. Scored one, nearly scored 2. You'd rather have him as an option on the bench than have no recognised striker at all on the bench which is gross negligence.

We don’t need to spend silly money, we need someone in to do a job for 6 months, that should not be a hardship for a competent DoF
In this limited time and market ladies and gentleman Mr. Diego Costa; leaves stage left
Whoever it was he apparently turned it down and it couldn't have been us as we are 8th.
Well to start with its a Sky nothing rumour, they know it was a top 6 club but don't know who?? Really. 2nd I saw this on the weekend when I think we were 6th and can be if we win our next game but that mute anyway its sky rubbish click bait. I agree if we are to sign only one player then it would be a forward ideally somebody that can play across the top 3 which King could do for 6 months or Diego as a 9. Wouldn't be happy with either but dont know who I can suggest at this last hour. I am hoping Marcel pulls something out of the hat and lets be honest he has done late deals before. I dont like either two especially King on a long term deal its just repeating past mistakes.

it was rotherham though, the guy has scored 2 league goals in 3 years. a ballboy wouldnt be far off doing that

Better than the Devil you know etc... He's clearly not in our short-term plans and Carlo doesn't trust him, so to an extent I can see the logic or freeing wages.

This could help fill the coffers for the summer when we bring in acquisition we really want, but it's still a risk that I do not think is either wise or acceptable.

He's more likely to score than Iwobi, Gylfi, Gomes or Gordon, so he's the most sensible option. Hopefully, they pull a rabbit out of the hat, but I'd be shocked.

And I'd be more than happy with a ballboy being out on the bench if he can slot mate. What I'm saying is DCL was injured and Tosun came in, scored a half decent goal, nearly scored a winner.

When we played Wolves there's no way he would have done any worse than Gylfi who basically just stood there for 90 minutes. Yet as things stand Gylfi is next in line as striker.

If Tosun and Bernard aren't gone they may well be weighing that up against a lack of alternatives - as somebody said - better the devil you know.
