Everton closing in on Ronald Koeman as new manager via Royal Blue Mersey

Is the hunt for a new boss reaching its endgame?

Everton’s hunt for a new manager could be nearing completion with Ronald Koeman now odds-on to move to Goodison Park.

Dutch media are reporting that Koeman’s agent, Rob Jansen, is on his way to Liverpool to hold talks with the Toffees.

Everton made Koeman their number one target from the outset, but early reports suggested the Dutchman was ready to sign a new deal at Southampton.

The south coast club have been in talks with Koeman’s representatives over a new deal at St Mary’s but nothing has been confirmed while the former Ajax boss was on holiday.

Koeman returned from his summer break yesterday and it appears his arrival back on these shores has accelerated Everton’s attempts to lure him to Merseyside.

Dutch journalist Tim de Wit tweeted this morning that Jansen was on his way to Merseyside to discuss terms. That was picked up by Dutch website voetbalzone.nl, who said Koeman was ready to "cut ties" with Southampton.

Little has been said in the English press about those reports, though David Maddock wrote about Everton’s determination to land Koeman in this morning’s edition of the Mirror.

The bookies have responded to the news by slashing Koeman’s odds of joining the blues; no doubt after a flurry of Everton fans backed the 53-year-old to move to Goodison Park after hearing the latest rumours.

There remains a long way to go and we still have precious little to go on. But it does appear Everton are stepping up the recruitment process and we could even hear something definitive by the weekend.

‘Money no object’ as Everton bid to lure Koeman with offer he can’t refuse via Royal Blue Mersey

Farhad Moshiri identified Ronald Koeman as his number one target weeks ago – and he is a man used to getting his own way.

Everton are on the brink of appointing Ronald Koeman as manager after blowing Southampton out of the water with an offer the Dutchman simply couldn't refuse.

That's according to the Daily Mirror, who seem convinced that Everton have got their man and placed the story on their back page.

Just reading the article makes me want to go for a lie down as it claims Farhad Moshiri will stop at nothing to tempt Koeman to quit St Mary's and head to Goodison Park.

It's all a far cry from just a few years ago when Everton were the paupers of the Premier League, struggling to come up with the funds to sign the likes Hugo Rodallega.

The Dutchman was initially reluctant to leave the Saints, who he guided to sixth place last season, and held talks over a new deal.

However, it appears the scale of Moshiri's ambition and vision (and lets face it, cold hard cash) has won Koeman over.

The Mirror claims Everton will double Koeman's wages to £7million a year, making him the joint-sixth highest paid manager in the world, something way out of Southampton's financial reach.

It is also claimed the 53-year-old will be handed a budget in excess of £100million as well as all the proceeds from the expected sale of Romelu Lukaku.

It's mind-boggling stuff and something my little Everton mind, crushed by years of mediocrity, is struggling to comprehend.

To cap things off Moshiri is looking to seal the deal for Koeman by selling him his vision for a new stadium, with reports already claiming the Iranian-born businessman wants Everton in a new ground within three years.

It's important to stress that nothing is yet confirmed and a number of reliable local journalists have yet to comment on the news. The Daily Mirror also has a patchy record when it comes to reporting Everton stories.

However, it appears at the very least that Everton are ready to do all they can to land Koeman.

And in football, money talks.

Everton 2015-16 Season in Review: Leighton Baines via Royal Blue Mersey

519990792.0.jpg

Some flashes of his old self and some flashes of getting old added up to a mostly indifferent season for the left back

There was a time not so long ago when Everton's left back was their primary creative force. Indeed in 2012-13 and 2014-15 Leighton Baines led the team in key passes per 90, and was not far off in 2013-14.

For better or for worse that changed this season. Baines was in and out of the lineup–first due to injury and then due to indifferent form–and ended up playing about 43% of league minutes (he'd averaged almost double that the previous two seasons). When on the field his attacking numbers weren't bad, but they no longer stand out from his teammates to such a degree. Early on in the campaign it became clear that the left side was no longer going to be Everton's reliable source of attacking thrust. Overall this made for an okay but not outstanding season from an individual perspective.

What he did well

While Baines was not the dynamic attacking force of previous seasons, he was still productive going forward and registered 1.34 key passes per 90 minutes, bettered at his position only by Alberto Moreno, Aleksandar Kolarov, and Christian Fuchs. Additionally, only Kolarov completed more crosses per 90 minutes from the fullback position. His pass percentage was a respectable 82%.

Granted they came from a limited number of minutes, the numbers suggest that Baines has remained a useful player in possession and continues to have an eye for creation with the ball at his feet. The glory days of marauding down the left with Steven Pienaar are long gone, but Leighton hasn't lost his attacking instincts by any means.

What he could have done better

The below radar charts plot Baines's performances across a variety of metrics over the last three seasons. The idea for these is taken from Ted Knutson, who explains them well here, and whose charts are prettier and probably slightly more accurate than mine. The concentric polygons represent percentiles based on the rest of the league. Basically, the closer to the outer rim, the higher percentile the player achieved in that stat.

All that being said, the idea here is to visualize some larger trends. Specifically with Baines, it's that his offensive production has remained at a high standard while his defensive production has slowly dropped off.

Note the gradual disappearance of the upper left quadrant–that's Baines's tackles going down, his fouls going up, and a decrease in his ability to prevent opponents from dribbling past him. These symptoms are what you might expect of an ageing player–as Baines slows down, he can no longer be expected to contribute to both phases of play at a high level.

The summer ahead

Baines was left out of Roy Hodgson's England squad for this summer's European Championships and so will hopefully be enjoying a bit of a holiday. With a contract signed through 2019 and no transfer rumors floating about, it seems likely that Baines will be back with the team next year.

The question is what exactly his place will be. He's ranged from merely good to exceptional for several years now, but on the wrong side of 30 one wonders how long he should be considered the first-choice left back.

The answer will have a lot to do with the new manager and the system he installs. Bainesy likely still has another year or two in him, but he needs more help structurally on the defensive side of the ball. He could also thrive as a wingback, and some have suggested a Philip Lahm-esque switch to central midfield, but without a decent amount of minutes watching him it's difficult to say how effective that could actually be.

Final Grade: C

Ultimately I think Baines's season was…okay. Missing four months through injury was a tough start, and while he still posted decent attacking numbers when he played, the tape and the defensive stats paint a picture of a player no longer at his peak.

To be clear, even a non-peak Leighton Baines is still a very good left back, but Everton transitioned this year from a team that relied on Baines in attack to one that didn't. And maybe that's okay–do you want your left back to be running the show going forward? In any case, whether it be Bryan Oviedo, Luke Garbutt, or someone on the transfer market, one hopes that the powers that be have a long-term replacement plan in mind.

GettyImages-531584532.0.jpg

Toffees look to be closing in on the the Southampton manager.

*UPDATE* Ronald Koeman's agent Rob Jansen confirms to Dutch public service broadcaster NOS that they are in talks with Everton

Everton's pursuit of a new manager has taken a giant leap forward with the news they have opened talks with Southampton's Ronald Koeman.

Sky Sources: Everton in talks with Ronald Koeman to become new manager. #SSNHQ

— Sky Sports News HQ (@SkySportsNewsHQ) June 3, 2016

Sky Sports News HQ claim Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is leading the talks with the Dutchman, detailing his vision to bolster the squad with a hefty transfer kitty and build a new stadium.

Compensation would need to be agreed with Southampton, with a fee in the region of £3million believed to be enough to buy Koeman out of the final year of his contract.

Reports breaking overnight claimed Everton were preparing a bumper offer that Koeman simply couldn't refuse with the promise of transfer funds in excess of £100m.

The move had been cast into fresh doubt earlier on Friday when local Southampton paper The Daily Echo claimed the Saints were still "hopeful" Koeman would sign a new deal at the club and no approach had been made.

Unclear how close Koeman to Everton is , but hear contract discussions etc with #saintsfc did not impress him. Could develop quickly #efc

— richard askam (@richaskam) June 3, 2016

The was contradicted by a report in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which claimed Everton could announce Koeman as their new manager within 24 hours.

@Rondiabc almost a done deal it seems. Only Southampton will try to make it as difficult as possible.

— Tim de Wit (@timdewit) June 3, 2016

That appears to be a little optimistic but it does appear a deal to bring Koeman to Everton is well underway and could be confirmed sooner rather than later.
