New manager faces the press for the first time

New Everton manager Ronald Koeman will speak to the press for the first time since his appointment to the Toffees’ hot seat on Friday afternoon from Finch Farm at 1:30pm UK time.

The interview will be telecast live on the club’s YouTube channel as well as on the Facebook page for the first time.

His brother Erwin, who was his assistant at Southampton as well as trainer Jan Kluitenberg are set to be appointed as backroom staff at the Toffees. It is not clear if any other members of the coaching team will be announced as well at the time.

The £5m compensation Everton agreed to with the Saints for Koeman included the release of the two coaches as well. Erwin will remain assistant coach while Kluitenber will be appointed fitness coach.

While Koeman has spoken on Everton TV a couple of days ago, this will be his first time facing questions from the press. Fans of the Blues and other teams as well will be watching this with high anticipation to hear about Koeman’s plans for this club.

Everton have ambition and can do more, says new manager Ronald Koeman via The Guardian

• Former Southampton manager’s priority is to meet his players
• Everton can improve and make advances, adds Koeman
Ronald Koeman claims Everton’s ambition was the factor that persuaded him to take what many see as a sideways managerial move, and says everyone at the club is ready to “take the next step”.

What that step might be is less clear. Bill Kenwright says no targets have yet been mentioned but would be surprised if Champions League football does not feature in his new manager’s plan for the next few years. Koeman himself admitted cracking the top four would not be easy.

Copa America Quarterfinal: Peru vs Colombia start time, TV schedule and live stream via Royal Blue Mersey

usa-today-9329034.0.jpg

James Rodriguez is on center stage in New Jersey

The United States are the first team onto the semi-finals of the Copa America Centenario. They will face the winner of the Venezuela/Argentina matchup (psst…it’s gonna be Argentina). That’s tomorrow. But tonight, it’s between Peru and Colombia for the second spot in the final four of this tournament.

Peru has been a surprise thus far, winning Group B. Colombia probably thought they would win Group A, but they will certainly take this scenario, missing Argentina until the Final, if at all.

Koeman excited to work with Everton Academy youth via Royal Blue Mersey

Youngsters will get more chances to play

Ronald Koeman has made a name for himself blooding youngsters at the higher levels of the game. Everywhere he has gone in his managerial career he has been adamant in using the younger players in the squad to give the squad the necessary boost whenever needed.

While the manager is set to announce his coaching staff in his first press conference on Friday afternoon, he has already been going over the rosters at the Academy and spoke to evertontv about his initial impressions.

VIDEO: @RonaldKoeman looking forward to working with #EFC's talented youngsters. #WelcomeRonaldhttps://t.co/SozjgHjZr7

— Everton (@everton) June 16, 2016

He went on to say about the youth:

“Everton had a strong squad last season. Of course, there will be some changes in the squad, but that is the same for every club ahead of a new season. First of all, it’s really important to get a good view about young players. I’m a manager that likes to give young players a chance to become part of the first team.

“I’ve heard Everton has a good academy with some very good young players. It’s important for the Club to give young players the chance to come through.

“I will talk to people at the Club over the weekend to make a plan over the next couple of weeks, then start pre-season and make sure we have a really strong team so we can have a strong team that can fight for a high position in the table.”

While Roberto Martinez gave youngsters like Matthew Pennington, Tyias Browning, Brendan Galloway, Kieran Dowell, Callum Connolly, Tom Davies and Jonjoe Kenny chances to play, we could see more of the kids during the Koeman regime.

Koeman already targeting Marko Arnautovic via Royal Blue Mersey

540154384.0.jpg

Could the Austrian winger be the first signing under Koeman

According to reports it looks like Ronald Koeman is burning to get started at Everton with his £100 million funds promised by majority owner Farhad Moshiri. In attempting to improve the attack he seems ready to target forward Marko Arnautovic from Stoke City.

It looks like Arnautovic is ready to move on from the Potters after being unable to reach an extension with the club and having only one year left on his deal Stoke will need to sell him this summer or risk him leaving for free in the next offseason.

Valued at about £10 million, he is primarily a winger with some ability to play as a more central forward. Regardless of the future of Romelu Lukaku, it appears Arnautovic is being viewed as an answer on the left wing along with Kevin Mirallas.

Stoke bought the Austrian international for £2.8 million three seasons ago so they look ready to make a tidy profit on him, but seem likely to make one more run at signing him before opening offers to outside clubs.

With 11 goals and 6 assists in 34 Premier League games last season Arnautovic would be a huge addition to the left wing where Everton struggled to find a consistent contributor all of last season. He is 27 years of age, so not a youth signing by any means, but the Toffees need impact-now players and must be willing to sign older players with an increased budget.

Koeman says Everton will play attacking football via Royal Blue Mersey

Koeman.0.jpg

Manager talks about his philosophy and vision

Ronald Koeman spoke with the press for the first time as Everton manager yesterday. In an exclusive interview with Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times, the Dutchman spoke about his vision for the club as well as holding court on a number of other topics.

"It is a great feeling to be Everton manager. From the beginning, I got the feeling from the chairman, Bill Kenwright, and from Farhad Moshiri, the club's major shareholder, that I was their No.1 choice and that is always a great feeling.

"Everton, of course, is a club with a really big history. In terms of league titles, we are the fourth most successful club in the history of English football with nine championships, as many as Manchester City and Chelsea combined. Now it is about what we can do to claim our own special part in this history.”

On his approach in the past with young players –

"For me, it's really important to get a good view about young players. I'm a manager who likes to give young players a chance to become part of the first team and Everton has a good academy with some very good young players. It's important for the club to give young players the chance to come through to the first team.”

On his competitiveness –

"My approach, my philosophy is very straightforward. I hate to lose and I like to have a really good relationship and respect with the players. Ultimately, the one who is responsible is the manager.

"I like to do things in a good, positive way because I believe, if you enjoy your job, you get the best out of yourself and we need to show that we are a strong team not just on the pitch but also off it. We will respect everyone.

"The best 11 will start and you win your place in the team every day by training and how you behave – that's very important.”

On his tactical mentality –

"I'm one of the Dutch coaches, of course, and Dutch coaches like to dominate games and not wait. I like to play attacking football and to press the opposition, to make it difficult. That's what we like to do and that's how we will do the (training) sessions. It's all about trying to dominate the game and giving the fans enjoyable football.”

On Everton’s strong fanbase –

"I like the fact that Everton is a community club with a strong community focus. We are a club of the people. This is important because you need this kind of thing to have a really strong club. Of course, the first team is the most important thing but it is also important to be involved in the academy and with our charity as well. I'm part of that now and I will support everybody in that because it makes us stronger together.”

On the high-profile coaches in the Northwest –

"So I am looking forward to this, course. It is interesting, too, because people are talking about the managers in the north west of England – me, Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

"Pep is a good friend of mine and it's nice to have those managers here because in the Premier League we try to have the best players and the best managers. Mourinho is back in the game and with Manchester United, it's nice to get maybe the best coach from Germany and then Pep Guardiola to Man City makes the Premier League more exciting for everybody.

"To be part of this is amazing and I'm very proud to be manager of Everton. We will do all we can to bring success here to the club."

Baines says all the Everton players wanted Koeman via Royal Blue Mersey

531575322.0.jpg

Player speaks about the new manager’s appointment

Once the appointment of Ronald Koeman as manager of Everton was confirmed, veteran defender Leighton Baines spoke to the press about his feelings about the new gaffer.

In an interview with evertontv, Baines said –

“It’s what we’ve all been waiting for and anticipating. It’s been really well received and it’s the appointment everyone was hoping for.

“It’s an interesting summer for this football club and the appointment of a new manager means everyone can start to look forward to what’s to come.

“His [Koeman’s] reputation speaks for itself. As a player he was obviously top-drawer and he’s on that path now as a manager as well.

“He did a fantastic job – in what was a difficult job – at Southampton with the players they lost. He did incredible there and that’s why I think our Chairman and Mr Moshiri were so focused on making him the man.

“We are just delighted that he is in now and are all looking forward to working with him.”

Baines was at Finch Farm get in some early fitness training after a season marred by injury for the usually dependable player. He went on speak about the Premier League schedule that was recently released, with the Blues hosting Tottenham on the first day of the season –

“We’ve got an exciting opener at home against Spurs which will be a great test for us and something we will look forward to.

“We want to get off to a good start and those first few weeks will be really important in trying to do that.

“Then you naturally look for different games – the derbies. But the way the league is now, they are all tough games. It proved that last season in particular.

“Every game is a big game and we are looking forward to getting started.”

Koeman was well-heralded as a dead-ball specialist in his time, and Baines is looking forward to picking up some tips from the new manager.

VIDEO: Leighton Baines is hoping to pick up a few more tips from set-piece specialist @RonaldKoeman. #WelcomeRonaldhttps://t.co/8LDVCFOUNh

— Everton (@everton) June 16, 2016

“You can sort of picture them now… he was certainly able to generate a lot of power! I’m sure he will have a few pointers for us all.

“He instantly commands your respect on many levels. The thing for us as players is the excitement of getting to work with him and enjoying the training sessions.

“Everyone speaks really highly of him, so it’s great for us as players to have someone like him to work with.”

Venezuela vs Argentina and Mexico vs. Chile for the final two spots in the semis.

Half of the semi-final teams in Copa America Centenario are set. The US beat Ecuador 2-1 on Thursday and then Colombia beat Peru in penalties after the two squads ended 90 minutes in a scoreless draw.

Today, the matches are Venezuela vs Argentina and Mexico vs. Chile. The winner of the first game takes on the US this Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST. The winner of game two gets Colombia on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST.

Again, we will see Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori suit up for the Argentines. The big question is, will Lionel Messi start for the first time this Copa? Or continue in his role as a bench player, exposing the opposition’s tired legs late in games?

Everton battling for Juventus striker via Royal Blue Mersey

539525310.0.jpg

According to reports Everton will be facing off with interest from fellow Premier League clubs Southampton and West Ham for Simone Zaza. The striker has been bench relegated for Italian championsJuventus. He is currently playing for Italy in the Euro 2016 tournament and was directly involved in the goal to beat Sweden.

Zaza was signed by Juventus last season for £13.5 Million, but has become a third or fourth option for Juventus. He appeared in 24 games in all competitions this past season averaging 40 minutes a game in his super sub type role. He totaled eight goals in that time. That’s one every three games played, but if you go by minutes played he scored once every 120 minutes or a goal every other game.

It’s unlikely that Zaza would be a full replacement for Romelu Lukaku and would appear to be a second option or second striker. He has no experience at wide positions so would not be a flexible option to play outside.

At only 24 years old he has plenty of time left in his prime making him a good target if Juventus does not see him in the future as their starting striker. As for Everton entrusting him in case Lukaku leaves does not seem like the best move. I would prefer a team looking at a large budget to aim at a more established striker.

Koeman: I will make Barkley a better player via Royal Blue Mersey

484099908.0.jpg

New manager fan of tougher approach

New Everton manager Ronald Koeman has promised a tougher approach towards the team. For Blues fans who had gotten used to the relentless positivism from former manager Roberto Martinez, this is going to come as a surprise.

The straight talk from the boss is a refreshing change.

“That is my character, I don’t like to lie or even make the picture nicer than the picture is.

“If we play bad, we play bad. I think that is the way to win. Put ambition and high standards to everybody.”

Koeman went on to expound about his tough-talking character –

“I am a nice man in the press, in the dressing-room, sometimes different. You need to be critical if you have reason but most of the time, you keep that inside the club.”

One of the first players to draw Koeman’s attention will be midfielder Ross Barkley. The youngster is currently in France with the England Euro 2016 squad, but is not expected to get a look-in from Roy Hodgson.

The Dutchman feels that there is room for improvement for the Wavertree-born player.

“He’s already a key player for Everton, even at a young age. I look forward to working with him and making him a better player.

“I like him as a player because he is good with his left foot, right foot and has a good view of the pitch. But he needs to improve, he is not just a talent any more he is a national team player and expectations are strong.

“We will give him every support. It is about building a good relationship with the players, showing them what they have to do to improve. It starts in the morning and finishes in the evening.”

Barkley endured a tough second half of the season as did striker Romelu Lukaku. It will be interesting to see how Koeman goes about changing that.

Everton and Roberto Martinez in compensation battle via Royal Blue Mersey

502537668.0.jpg

Blues still not quite rid of Bobby-Brown-Shoes

On a week when Everton announced their new manager Ronald Koeman for a princely sum of £5million per year for a three-year term, there still remains the small matter of settling with the former manager Roberto Martinez who was relieved of employment towards the end of a second consecutive underwhelming season.

The Catalonian was in charge at £3.5million per year with three seasons still left in the terms of his contract. It is believed that the club and Martinez are yet to reach an agreement on whether that amount can be negotiated down from the £10.5million still owed to the former manager.

Initially it had appeared the two parties would compromise at a middle ground, but now it appears that there will be an independent hearing in the coming week since Martinez’ legal team are now pushing for the contract to be paid off fully. It is yet unknown if there were any performance terms written into the said contract which would give the Blues some leverage.

However, considering how enamored Club Chairman Bill Kenwright had been with the 42-year-old Spaniard, it is quite likely that the Toffees will have no recourse but to spend £10.5million of new owner Farhad Moshiri’s money paying off the former gaffer instead of being able to invest those funds into a couple of depth players at least.

Martinez was interviewed last week by Anderlecht, but the Belgian club chose to not wait and instead signed FC Nurnberg manager Rene Weiler. Anderlecht finished second in the Jupiler Pro League, and will play in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers towards the end of the summer.
