Everton play like 'Stoke'

The BBC do disagree with him though, albeit rather weakly.

I agree he should have lamented them after the game, as Rodgers and Gerrard did in such a condescending manner. He should have stuck it right to them and labelled them cheats, yard dogs etc..

Absolutely he should have. Moyes first statements post match, camera front and centre:

"We were kicked off the park there. I'm furious with the referee. He failed to give protection to a side like us trying to get hold of the ball and play."

BANG.

Narrative in motion, issue nailed.

All that did was to emphasise Liverpool's line about a long ball game. No one goes away thinking about the stats that contradict it.

Moyes is so naive. I dont know where the other Moyes has gone: the feller who came into Goodison and took control of the imagery and identity of Merseyside football with his People's Club comment. That had them rocking for years. It was a masterstroke. Where's that feller gone to? Where's the present day Moyes' understanding of how this football culture of ours ticks?

He's let us down here. It's still not too late, btw. Our media machine should be even now slinging in the word to media outlets about how we were hacked and stopped in our tracks by a team only intent on spoiling a game of football. Moyes in particular should be getting out there and putting things right.

Also, after a quick read through the comments section, most people disagree with Gerrard, and the posters that are agreeing with him are being pulled up. The general consensus on there seems to be that Gerrard is a f*cking idiot.

It's a stereotype we've worked hard to shift and it's important it's countered and crushed immediately because it can be corrosive on our image.

Dont underestimate the danger of this.

You're massively overplaying the importance of Steve Gerrards bitter rant here.

He's being universally laughed at across the football community today & the stats are being bandied around every football forum etc.

He's playing to his own crowd, the cult, spewing out some of the old cliches that a few years age were factual, but in 2012 are not a reflection of reality. But nonetheless they'll lap them up, twist them around & convince themselves that everything in the garden is rosy................for another week at least......it's laughable in it's transparency.

in addition to my comment, i totally agree with this, if i was everton manager i would have pointed this out. used gerrard and kuyt as an example and hung them out to dry, sadly these are the two players that have constantly downed us in the past (most of kuyt's being dubious penalties). They have always been the dirtiest team in the derbies and sadly, the opposing manager will just point to the facts that we've had much more red cards. Moyes should hang stevie g out to dry as an example because he has produced some of the most horrendous tackles seen on a football pitch in derbies. Suarez is closing in on him as well, i would like to see more from moyes on this stance

Maybe he feels he's got too much dignity to come out and say things like that, but when shark face and GBH come out and say that it requires a response of the same tone. I would have loved him to have commented on the way GBH bitched about Neville for diving, pulling up all his and Suarez's past theatrics, and highlighting how there has never once been a single bit of acknowledgement or apology for that behavior. Neville on the other hand looked mortified and apologised profusely.

To be honest, probably along with the WBA defeat that was the worst we have played this season, there were mitigating factors,Pienaar is key to a lot of our creativity,Mirallas was great in that role for 45 mins,Naismith on the other side is more of a steady eddie so you lose a little on the right side,Fellaini also did well to complete 90 mins and did not look fully fit IMHO,the fact we still could and should have won the game,I feel says an awful lot more about Libewpewl football club!!

to be fair, last year before the game he said the ref needs to be strong as the game could hinge on a decision - result - rodwell sent off. There's no guarantee that what he says will determine a positive effect on us. He said suarez should have been sent off and i do agree with you that he should have stated that it shouldn't have been a goal anyway, but i think he's just taking the piss. There have been plenty of instances in the past where there's been a similar situation and he's pointed out a foul that should have been anyway and thus justice was done. He deep down knows that he has had nowhere near the rub of the green off officials and to think we may have got lucky, he's just going to go with it and rub it in their faces - to me that's better than sounding all whiny like gerrard and saying well it shouldn't have been a free kick anyway or a foul in the build up.

With regards to gerrard's comments, if he gets asked about it pre-fulham, you know he'll laugh it off and point to all the flair players we have and specific stats. It will make him laugh, guaranteed. If teams are going to be deluded and listen to gerrards comments and set up against us as if they were playing stoke, they'd be in for a massive shock - of course the premier league is a multi billion profession so that will never happen

He's fair to a fault Moyes. It's a good trait to have usually, but in this fixture it's toxic to your own well being. I take your point that he's had a bit of a go at framing stuff pre and post match before, but you just cant adopt the line of being specific about one or two incident and calling for a strong refereeing performance is pretty insipid. It has to be seizing the matter by the scruff of the neck like they did after this Derby. They just declared our whole philosophy in the eyes of the world for us as a long ball team and it'll stick if not countered.

Here's what Royle (or maybe the early Moyes) would have said:

"It's a shame that a club once associated with passing football are now resorting to a physical approach and stopping other teams playing. It'd have never happened in Paisley's day"

They'd have been spitting poison for the next 6 months.

Ffs, let him say that; we all saw the game, they were the ones who kicked us off the park.

Everytime we play the long ball, it gets brought down and we then play it on the floor in the final 3rd.

I think we need to just put this game to bed, forget and stop obsessing about Liverpool, and concentrate on Fulham this weekend.

You can tell Everton are a long ball team by the fact that they paid £35 million for Andy Carroll.

"The stats, however, showed that Everton had greater possession, greater passing accuracy and played proportionally fewer long passes than Liverpool."

Its also worth noting that Liverpool have more long balls per game than West Ham on average, hardly this free-flowing system that Rodgers and Gerrard would have you believe.

In what sense? 3rd best goal difference in the country? 2 pacey goal scoring wingers? We would give Liverpool a game.

Liverpool have been pretty poor this season.

He really should focus on himself and his own team.

I can be relatively neutral as a Newcastle fan.
Why is it OK for Gerrard to launch 60 yard passes- that seems to be 'a pinpoint pass'
I only saw the 1st half, but Everton were constantly attaching down the left wing, not launching long balls.
Perhaps he should be talking about why his own club have spent tens of millions more on players yet still have 'a young, small team'
What a Bitter Man!

A poor claim from an ageing and failing footballer, he obviously didn't read the match statistics which clearly show the only count his side were greater than Everton was fouls, possession no, passes complete no, passing accuracy no and less long passes. Its par for the course for them to be history revisionists though, how many years before an official apology for the 39 killed at Heysel again?

Bitter comments from yesterday's man. They're struggling in the league and he doesn't like it and that's fair enough, no professional footballer should settle for second best, but to come out with comments such as those when the statistics that all clubs use including his own show different is just being petulant. The table doesn't lie unless you're a deluded kopite and of course Steven Gerrard

Why does he need to mention Stoke? The Potters may have a certain style, but it works and has led to them being one of the more consistent teams in the Premier League this season - more than can be said for Liverpool.

Great player who is falling from grace, harder to watch with him coming out with deluded comments like this. Liverpool are starting a new era (judging by their start to the season - it'll take a long time getting there) and I think he knows himself he'll not be part of it.

Yes, big lads like Osman, Mirallas, Coleman, Baines, Neville....... I think that the stats would disprove every single thing that he's said. Everton have a shorter and lighter team than Liverpool, play better football and are far better than Liverpool. The stats don't lie.

Did Gerrard play on Sunday? Don't remember seeing him.

'Everton enjoyed more possession than Liverpool (56.2% to 43.8%), made more passes (400 to 314), had greater passing accuracy (78.5% to 76.8%) and played proportionally fewer long passes (13.8% to 14.6%).'

I thought once again Suso showed he isn't ready. Shows flashes of his obvious technical ability but he disappears too much. Inconsistency & off-games are par for the course with young players.

@151 - So what about the majority of the neutrals on here agreeing Everton were the better side? Are the better side? And years to come will be the better side?

I can see Everton becoming the new Spurs.

White Hart Lane just might get a bit crowded.

Unanimous.

This man never ceases to show himself up as massive tit. How can you be so deluded to think you can get away with describing a completely different match to the one that happened in reality? Everyone was watching it you c*ck!
I remember watching the game on Sunday and actually thinking how nice we don't play hoofball anymore. Everton had most of the play, played more attractive football and created more chances. Just our luck that jelavic has an off day.
Beggars belief.

if we had Pienaar + Mirallas we'd of created enough chances to win. Was obvious Gueye + Naismith werent gonna be good enough despite working hard

Everton have played nasty football for AGES. Surprised it took this long for someone to point it out. They have a nasty little manager, play on a nasty, tight little pitch and their first instinct is ALWAYS to stop the other team playing. Ugh.

Worst rated comment on the bbc page about this gerrard thing.

Everton have had more shots on goal (173) than any team in the top five leagues in Europe. Bayern 172, Real & Man City 168, Spurs 165.

Liverpool have had more shots off target (80) than any team in the major European leagues. Then Bastia 73, Real 71, Spurs & Juve 70.

Of Liverpool's 80 shots off target, Luis Suarez responsible for 31 of those. Next Prem highest is Jermain Defoe (20) then Demba Ba (14).

Yeah, we are playing like Stoke. (y)
