Junior Interview

Junior Guest Column in local paper from a couple of weeks ago

League One (as mentioned above)
Doncaster: Conor Grant - started in 2-0 home win against Colchester, scored in 41st minute on debut.
Doncaster: Felipe Mattioni - not in matchday squad

OS Match Report
"Despite Colchester being the slightly better team, Rovers took the lead shortly before half time with a stunning goal from Conor Grant on his debut. The Everton loanee received the ball twenty yards out and, finding space to shoot opened up his body before beautifully curling the ball into the top corner leaving Jamie Jones with no chance."

Manager Darren Ferguson interview: "Felipe Mattioni's last appearance was against Real Madrid and his next one could be against Stalybridge Celtic!" (R1 FA Cup)

Junior looked like he had a few good touches as well as his goal, and the fan reports posted here seem to rate him highly. Shame he's not getting more starts.
That was a typical Conor Grant goal, how many times have we seen him score with a cultured left foot shot. I seem to remember his loan spell at Motherwell started with a goal from a free kick, but then he faded. In the u21 game at Southamton he looked like he was now more prepared to apply himself a bit more . The natural talent is there, this is his chance to show if he has more to his game, good luck to him.

I've mixed feelings about that. He needs games to see if he really is worth signing long term, but cup-tieing him at Doncaster may come back to bite us come February.

Found this bit in that interview with Junior particularly poignant, think we sonetimes forget how difficult it is for a young lad especially with no family in the country.

When I arrived I couldn’t speak one word of English. I had to start all over again in a different country, and a different culture. Now I am settled here – still on my own, but trying to enjoy myself and be happy playing footballer.

I wouldn’t say I’m completely ‘happy’, but what can I do? I just have to keep going, that’s life. Sometimes, trust me, it’s very hard to be alone when things are not going your way. You don’t have anyone to talk to, anyone to help you, anyone to push you in the right direction. You have to do everything yourself, and sometimes that can lead to you making the wrong decisions. When you make a decision, it’s all on you – and you don’t know if it’s going to be wrong or right, there’s no-one to discuss it with.

It’s good in the sense it’s made me grow up and be a man, which I am now. I am learning from all the mistakes I am making – many, many mistakes. The last few years have also been the worst years of my life. I lost my mum, and I just didn’t know what to do.

Injured at the start of the season. Fulham played well and sticking with a winning team. He will make his way in I am sure.

According to transfermarkt, Husband's loan ends on December 13th. I guess Luke will just have to be patient and continue fight for his place. Just disappointed for him. Sure the club are also disappointed. I'm sure they expected him to have made more than just 2 starts after a third of the season.

FRANCISCO JUNIOR’S FUTURE AT WIGAN
Posted by JJ in Player profiles and tagged with everton, Francisco Junior, wigan athleticNovember 3, 2015

Francisco Junior has started in just five games for Wigan Athletic and only finished the full ninety minutes in one of those. He has spent a large proportion of his time at the club injured and is involved in another scandal involving his behavior off the field.

Junior has had a troubled past and some of those demons just don’t seem to go away. But he has nevertheless captured the hearts of so many Wigan Athletic fans with his humility and his sheer footballing ability. His 95th minute winning goal against Swindon on Saturday brought the house down.

I had never even heard of Junior when he made his first appearance in a pre-season friendly against Partick Thistle at Firhill. For me he was the best man on the pitch that night. But I just could not understand at the time why a footballer with such talent would not be well known.

However, I did some research and contacted Everton fan site Toffeeweb for a fan view. The player has clearly had a chequered past. His move from street football in Guinea-Bissau, a country whose per-capita income is one of the lowest in the world, to Benfica was one for the story books. Playing in that Benfica academy led to him representing Portugal at under-19 and under-21 levels. Still only 23 years of age, he retains those silky skills that one associates with the best of Portuguese players. But Junior has still not been able to convince a club that he is worthy of a regular place in their starting lineup. As a footballer he remains “a work in progress”.

Gary Caldwell initially signed Junior from Everton on a one month loan, which was extended to January. The question is whether Latics will seek prolonging his loan or making him a permanent signing. Junior’s contract at Everton is up at the end of the season and he is unlikely to be offered a renewal. The question is whether Caldwell and Latics are willing to take a gamble on the player.

Despite not being able to command a regular place in the starting lineup of a League 1 side, Junior as a footballer cannot be written off. He is still young and has genuine talent. Can he be steered towards achieving his potential? Could it happen at Wigan?

Despite his lifestyle difficulties, Junior’s humble approach is admirable. A couple of weeks ago he opened his heart – not for the first time – in the guest column for Wigan Today.

However, emotion apart, one of his key comments was “If I can keep my fitness up and avoid injury, I can do my best to help the team and achieve my goals”.

Francisco Junior has the pre-requisites to play at a level well above that of League 1. When he comes on the field for Latics he invariably alters the style of play. His ball skills and movement make him look a class above many of his colleagues. However, he remains largely unable to stamp his authority on to the 90+ minutes of a regular match. Fitness remains a major issue.

Caldwell and his recruitment team have been keen to try to sign the “right kind” of player. Junior is certainly “hungry” for success on the football field, even if his lifestyle excesses provoke questions.

Over the next couple of months Francisco Junior needs to show Gary Caldwell that he merits the club making the effort to negotiate with Everton for his release.

Up to this point he has made five starts, playing beyond the 55th minute on just two occasions. He has made four appearances off the bench.

So many Wigan Athletic supporters are willing Francisco Junior to succeed on the field of play and to overcome his lifestyle problems. He has endeared himself to them through his openness and honesty and his determination to be a better footballer.

But the burning issue for Caldwell is whether the player can reach fitness levels commensurate to challenging for a regular place in the starting lineup.

If that is not the case, it is unlikely that Latics will endeavour to seek his services beyond January.

However, the prospect of a Francisco Junior at the height of physical fitness and revealing his undoubted potential is a mouth-watering prospect for Wigan Athletic fans.

Russell Griffiths signs a one month loan to Halifax :

As mentioned above:

Championship
Fulham - Garbutt unused sub for 1-3 away defeat to Burnley

Charlton - McAleny started in 0-1 away defeat to MK Dons, taken off at half time

OS match report

McAleny getting his usual 'rave reviews' on the Charlton fans' website but no comments as yet.

(Just in case anyone was picking up on a few veiled references in the Junior stories above or on Twitter, they are referring to an alleged incident in a nightclub where the only original source I can see is the Sun, thus haven't mentioned it.)

He's moving up the football pyramid quickly, one more promotion and he'll be in league 2

Is he trying to play in every single league this season?

Was thinking this morning in the shower (I constantly think about tall young athletic men in the shower), he needed a move up in quality a bit, I was thinking if Iain Turner is in goal for Tranmere at the moment im sure he could of gone there, looking at that league though Halifax is at a similar level to Tranmere so will be good for he lad!
Cant even remember the last time we had a goalkeeper from the academy play a league game for us!

Probably no one higher than Norwich Victoria would take a chance on him, with him only being 19 and never having played competitive football before. As he proved himself at that level he got an offer from a better team and now it's happened again. He could actually play against Tranmere now, would be great if he made it into the football league by the end of the season though.

At 23 Junior is in danger of heading the same way as George Green. It's quite a chequered history he's had and to be fair some of it hasn't been his fault - injuries, something peculiar going on between Benfica and Man City. But Wigan appears to be a good club for him to prove himself at, good playing style, well positioned in the league, were not shy about giving Kenny a run. The talent is there........ but is the application? I hope he can get a loan extension at Wigan, as well as our own grown talent we have two other " imports" trying to prove themselves already in Henen and Leandro so difficult to see a future for him at FF in January .

Reads a bit blunt:

When asked whether the Charlton dressing room is fragile following their wretched run, the Belgian said: “They are not down, everyone was very disappointed [after the last two results] but we know the only way is to look forward and work hard and the players are willing to do that.

“If players don’t want to do it I’m not going to use them.

“In that case we ended the contract of Conor McAleny today so it needed to give an example.”
