Doncaster Rovers: Mattioni ‘good enough for Premier League’ - Grant

Conor Grant has delivered a potential pick-me-up to fellow loan star Felipe Mattioni - by insisting the Brazilian is good enough to play in the Premier League.

Mattioni has returned to parent club Everton for treatment on the hamstring injury he picked up during Rovers’ recent win at Oldham Athletic.

Rovers have agreed in principle to extend the 27-year-old’s loan until the end of the season but are now waiting to learn the extent of the former Espanyol, Mallorca and AC Milan defender’s latest injury setback.

Mattioni, who suffered two cruciate knee ligament injuries during his time in Spain, had just returned to the Rovers team after a calf injury had kept him out for a month.

Now facing yet another spell on the sidelines, you would forgive Mattioni should his morale have hit rock bottom.

However, the words of his Rovers and Everton teammate Grant might just keep his chin up.

“I think he’s good enough [to play in the Premier League],” Grant said, prior to Mattioni’s latest injury.

“I’ve been very impressed with him.

“I didn’t know much about him [prior to this season].

“He had trained with us at Everton for a few weeks before we both came here and you could see he was a good player but you didn’t know how he was going to be in a game environment.

“He’s been superb. On the ball he’s different class.

“Obviously he’s got the experience and he’s been unlucky with injuries, very unlucky.

“He’s played with some top class players. I’ve seen the pictures of him with the likes of Beckham and Ronaldinho. It has been brilliant to play with him.

Such a strange deal, hes got to prove his fitness of course but seems to be continuously injured at every club hes been with...feel bad for him but how can we sign him if hes only fit like gibson?

i wonder if this was a favour to an agent?

Ya felt that way myself reading it.is he in a long term contract?surely 27 years of age with the injuries he has had and still seems to pick up his prospects cant be good.never seen the lad play so i dont know exactly how good he is but doncaster reports seem positive enough.

Hasn't he got the same agent as one of our players? I seem to remember someone saying that.

The deal sort of makes sense anyway, it would have saved us a lot of money to have a good back up RB for free but I don't think it's worth the risk now, he can't even stay fit in league 1. Hopefully our interest in Byram is genuine and we've decided to go for him instead.

Liam Walsh to Yeovil on a loan for a month. Good move for him I believe.
"Manager Darren Way said: "Liam has come highly recommended to us by Everton and David Unsworth, we have previously had both Shane Duffy and John Lundstram on loan from the Blues so know the quality they produce."

"I would like to thank all the staff at Everton, especially Roberto Martinez for allowing Liam to join us. There were a number of clubs interested in signing Liam, so it is nice to secure his signature and hopefully all his attributes will add to our team and help this fantastic club stay in the Football League."
