Leaving out the non-League loans, it's really quite a mixed bag.
On the one hand, Barkley didn't rip it up on loan (in fact, I seem to remember him being quite heavily criticised). But then he was younger and not everyone can be a Coleman. You would hope for better from McAleny, given his age and career stage. but probably not ideal being more of a finesse player in a struggling Championship side. Same with Grant at Motherwell (back with U21s now) and Kennedy at Cardiff (currently Championship bench player) last year.
With Junior, the skill is possibly all there but again, given his size, he is really going to have to stand out to get a manager to pick him consistently in League One.
Garbutt - he might be good but is he good enough (remember he is coming back from injury)? And do we have enough space to carry four left-backs, all of whom have a claim at the first team? Especially since they would be blocking any other talent coming through from younger groups. Personally speaking, I think he has a year in the shop window - if Baines declines and he beats out the competition then he stays with us. If not, he gets sold on to a decent club.
Great reports.
I like Garbutt, good player, but as pointed out he's currently 4th. in line for the LB spot with some good youngsters coming through. If I were him I'd be looking at a move to a club that doesn't have so many boss LB's.
I started to pay attention to McAleney after some of the pre-season hype, watched some of the U21 games in which he played and just didn't see it, why the hype ? All I saw was an average Sunday league player who seemed more concerned with his dodgy hairdo than putting a shift in and impressing on the pitch. I saw me > 20 years ago when I thought I was the dog's doo~daa's. C'mon Conor mate, you're f'all, work hard and even if you don't 'make it' at least you can't say it's not from lack of effort.

Tbf it's because he genuinely did boss a couple of pre-season games.
It was this game that made people pay attention to him, he doesn't seem to be playing to the same standard now thoughGreat reports.
