I mean no one said you automatically become better when you break a transfer record however it is a sign of the times when West Ham, Newcastle and villa are making marquee signings in excess of 50 mil and qualifying for champions leagues and winning European trophies and they were all relegated in recent history

In even more recent history, though, they’ve won a European trophy, and qualified for the CL respectively. In that time we’ve battled relegation. That’s before we consider the grave financial mismanagement.

And you saw the desperation forced on them the last few weeks before the p&s cut off because they failed to qualify for the CL. If they fail again this season they'll have to do something very similar and likely even moreso to be able to avoid a points deduction. Remember Newcastle are now gonna for this upcoming season be losing the last Ashley season (net positive income) in control from there 3 year cycle - they are in very big financial doo doo if they don't get CL this season.
