Sell Michael Keane & bring in another solid CB to pair with Tarkowski, aswell as bringing in that ball-playing defensive mid that Frank's looking for and already...

We're looking in much better shape for the season.

Let's face it, we fell apart because of a disastrous CB partnership that shook the entire teams confidence. We couldn't outscore our poor defending.

With that solved, I see no reason why we can't go back to being a top half side, pretty easily.

Let's go Frankie!

We fell apart because we had 35% possession per game and that's unsustainable for any defence long term - never mind a relatively poor/average one.

Not being able to keep hold of the ball put huge pressure constantly on the defence - and in part that leads to defensive errors over time.

Throw on top of that we literally have no defensive shield from midfield for the defence and it compounds the problems.

If were sat deep due to the (lack of) pace of the defence then we wont be able to have more posession than the opposition.

We'd need players at the back who are quick and who can play a higher line...then the midfield can also be more advanced along with the full backs.

Anyone at the back who cant turn and who isnt athletic needs to be moved on before we look at having increased posession stats.

Isn’t Branthwaite meant to be going on loan anyway?

Spurs are the ones to watch now. They've added Perisic and Richarlison to their attacking lineup, and also spent money elsewhere (Bissouma)... Can't help but wonder if Son is going to leave.

That appears to be the consensus opinion. The new rule about five substitutions might make a difference though.

I don't see the point in playing three CBs every game if it means we have to stockpile in that position to the detriment of funding upgrades in midfield and and attack. We can play a back four with our existing personnel, so sell Mina and Keane asap.

If we go into the season with Tarkowski + Holgate + Godfrey as the 3 starting senior centre backs then thats ok.

We then have Branthwaite + a new young signing who can aim to push into the 11 and be rotating in/out during the season.

Move out Mina and Keane and bring in Colwill if its possible.

Theres no need to be aiming for starting over 23 ages players in defence.

I kind of have a theory on this (and with the obvious caveat that our midfielders aren't good enough to keep possession).

It's that essentially Benitez fell into this awful "sweet spot" of having a team that is neither good, or bad enough to execute his plan.

If you look at the sides he had at Liverpool, Chelsea etc and asked them to play on the counter, they had players with the tactical discipline to execute it.

Then if you look at Newcastle they had players uses to being bad, not having the ball and doing the things you needed to do.

We were in that sweet spot. We invited teams onto us, but didnt have a defence that could withstand that pressure. The possession stat is as much to protect the defence than the attack.
