Everton Summer Transfer Thread - 2022

The club massively overstated it's hand last summer. Given that the realisation that we were on the brink of breaking P&S rules belatedly set in, I'm sure they thought that a squad that had just finished tenth (but had operated higher than that for the vast majority of the season) would have no issues with comfortably playing out a season far away from danger under a pragmatic manager with no investment.

However, when you throw in that last season was a sham due to it being played behind closed doors, our new manager had an unwinnable scenario with the fans and the players were all too happy to hide behind him and probably the worst injury crisis we've ever seen, an average team quickly becomes a very bad one. A legendary manager couldn't get results with this lot last season unless he parked two JCBs in front of the goal and looked to nick one with a corner. So the signs were there that the true level of our players was far lower than what we 'achieved' last season.

The small matter of our owner being a colossal idiot also plays a factor, as was that utter balloon Marcel Brands.
What’s all that got to do with buying and selling players.

Like I said earlier, maybe the club are quite happy to just stay under the threshold till BDM and spend 3 Yrs getting players off the books.

The club isn't under the threshold though. If it wasn't for the ability of blaming a heap of our losses on COVID, which is a load of crock by the way, then we'd be miles outside of it. The club can't go on running the same way, or anything like the same way because we're going to end up in major trouble if we do.

My prior point was that the club thought they could ride out a season with no investment in the squad because they didn't forsee us ever having to contend with a relegation battle. They now understand, or at least they should understand, that we have an absolutely terrible team that needs to be dramatically overhauled.

If we don't make major changes to our team, then we'll get relegated next season, I have no doubts about that. We simply must sell as many of them as we possibly can this summer.

What I'd like to see, provided we survive that is.

The deadwood are gone, Delph, siggy, Kenny (sorry Jon Joe) etc.

If buyers can be found, the mentally weaker / not progressing players sold - Keane, holgate, Rondon.

Not averse to a big ticket player going. DCL, Richie.

More importantly, I'd like to see the increased involvement in homegrowners - onyango, Simms, Dobbin et al.

I don't reckon we're as bad as we're showing, and a couple of players (with character in key positions - older or younger) could change us pretty quickly.
Plus, I believe, should we survive, in the Coaching team for the first time in ages to progress us in an incremental way. That was my big reservation of Frank coming in.... The time and immediate pressure, which seems to be the case. Given time, I'd love to see what he and his impressive staff can do with a core of the players we have, without purely buying it.

You're both oversimplifying things. We've been losing 100m+ a year. The last accounts showed salary/revenue at a ridiculous ratio. Yes, we probably reduced losses recently but revenue is also reducing from a lower league finish, overly inflated sponsorship deals ending and let's be honest, creative accounting for COVID can't go on indefinitely. There is a huge amount of money to be found for us to operate within the rules. We can't just sell and splash out Megabucks again. We will spend this summer, assuming we sell, but we can't just ignore the reality. Some prudence is still required.
Prudence is definitely needed as one summer will not be the magic wand to remove our sustained losses.

There should be some signings, but as you mention the releasing of players (particularly wages) and selling players will not offset our financial problems.

However, by selling key players we may have another leeway to invest in the squad and reduce our losses for sustainability.

….sounds good but the home grown players have to be good enough. The fact we let Simms go out on loan when we were short on striker cover suggests he’s not considered the right level.

True... Always the case. But I think also character, drive and the will to be better are perhaps by us often overlooked - supposedly buying the finished product, which hasn't worked well for us. Also, one could argue he was loaned out, at that time, that he comes back better and is for the season coming ready as a backup. I'm also not sure, but it would resonate more with me than a Rondon.

…he must have been at least as effective an option as Rondon, but I suspect we know why Benitez brought him in. Point remains, that a few managers failed to give Simms an opportunity, he was rarely on the bench.

Lampard might want a look at him in the summer. He’ll already have a view on Dobbin and Onyango, reports are he rates Mills which doesn’t surprise me. The loanee that might have a chance is Nkounkou, given our lack of LB cover & Lampard appears to like attacking full backs.

Have we got one ie. Summer transfer thread? Can we afford one? Unless we flog our tarnished Crown Jewels it's impossible to see how we will better last years especially since we subsequently signed Patterson and Mykolenko (who, by the way, may turn out a decent acquisition given time. Oh, but, of course, as Evertonians we don't tend to do that)

You're right... There were a few games where I thought he'd have been a far better option than Rondon. Who, despite the reasons he came for (cough cough) I thought in some respects was a sensible option.

With regard the others, I can only go off what others report... Welch has been recently involved with the first team and there seem to be a few U18s that are interesting for the future. mills as you say, seems strong.
However, as I said, the Coaching and improvement of what we have can only be positive for the club and fans alike... Identity.

I'm not against buying, far from it. It's exciting (Rodrigo springs to mind) but where we are and what we are, seem to be overlooked. We need profile of person, more than profile of player. IMO.

Nail on head here Eggs. While we may want the home-grown talent fighting for places, it's all based on them being good enough to compete at this level.

In most cases, this will not be the case when you consider the standard required to play in the PL or at least competitively. How many actually ever are?

With regards to the rest, I'd be happy to get rid of most of the current squad over the next season or two.
