And in the season between the two?

Ancelotti created a system where Allan, Doucoure and A.N. Other bossed the midfield in plenty of games, got at least parity in several more and only really struggled against the very best teams.

But sure, let's sell Doucoure and Allan, and start with Gomes, Davies and someone else in 2022/23. Good Lord above.

The sensible plan is to ship out Gomes and Davies, then bring in new starters who are better than Allan and Doucoure. Why? Because Allan and Doucoure are better than Davies and Gomes, so making them the backups raises our "floor" and makes our starting lineup better. Doing it your way makes the same improvement to the starting lineup better but keeps the very low floor where it is. The moment there's an injury in your version, Gomes has to start games. Unless you know of a transfer target who is totally impervious to injury, your approach leads to the lesser outcome.
Agreed. Actively trying to sell Allan and Doucoure is bonkers when they’re the best we have.
If a big offer comes up and we can replace them with someone better, obviously do, but you don’t get better by selling your best players unless it’s an enormous fee and we reinvest wisely and only three of our players would command proper fees.

It depends on who we get offers for. I'd gladly sell any.

Ancelotti's team controlled the midfield for about 4 games. It was legitimately impressive. We kept right in it against the RS. And then we got battered so bad by Saints once someone figured out where the weaknesses were that not only did we never do it again but Ancelotti essentially stopped trying.

Without knowing who is going to be on the promoted sides I have us as the worst midfield in the league. The only way to salvage it is get a true DM and play a 3 with that player behind Iwobi and hopefully Allan. Might need another box to box too. And that won't happen so we'll be getting passed around again next year.

My wife watches our dog when he plays in the garden. Doesn't make her a vet.

You may watch a lot, but your posting history suggests you either struggle to (or don't even try to) critically analyse players and performances in an unbiased fashion.
No mate, it suggests I don't do it in the same fashion as you.

At least we can agree on something: a true DM should be a major transfer priority for the club right now, and a new box2box CM as well.

Again incorrect. We had a monumental injury list. But don't let that get in your way.

I don't keep a tally mate. I do watch football though.
But you are so certain that they are all better than pickford. You cant make that judgement unless you have watched them a similar amount of times to have the evidence base to back up your assertions. And I would expect, you probably watch them in a full game every now and again but otherwise just see the match highlights.
