Everton Summer transfers 2021

A new CB doesn't excite me.

I'd love a great centre back in. I'm not convinced by any of ours bar Godfrey, and he's still got some developing to do.

I think our defensive frailties were mostly covered by playing quite deep, and with fifty defenders. Needing to play that way creates too many problems elsewhere as far as I can see.

An athletic unit of a centre back would go a long way to making us better. It's a big ask though, especially with other areas of the side needing repair.

White is proper, proper quality. The prospect of him and Godfrey as long term centre-halves for Everton is very appealing.

He's one of those players who are good at everything, extremely reliable, reads the game well.

I'd have no problem with this transfer whatsoever, except... it's not really the priority position. As bad as Michael Keane is, we have much worse in other areas. So if it's an 'either/or' scenario in terms of spending big money this summer, I'd much prefer us to bring in players in positions of weakness like wide right/left, central midfield and right back.

If we're just going to laugh at FFP and spend whatever, which is what I think we should do, then Ben White for £50m is almost a no brainer.

The fact that we need about 4 positions filled first.

But sound, let’s launch 50 big ones on another CB and take our inventory up to 6

The expectation would be two of Mina/Keane/Holgate would be moved on of course.

Speaking of which, if we could get £20m apiece for Mina and Keane and bring White in as the replacement for a net spend of £10m, that'd be astonishing business IMO.

Mina + Keane out and White in

= Godfrey / White
+ Holgate / Branthwaite

Seems alot better to me than what we have now.

Also i disagree massively about "we need 4 positions filled first"...

The two positions we should be focused on getting sorted are CB and RB. We'll never progress without the ability for the defence to push up the pitch.

We'd need a world class winger who could beat 3 men and score (Kanchelskis) if were always sat deep every match.

Im hoping this isnt just a rumour :o

Just a question on White mate, why is he not ahead of Mings in the cue for England? The price seems huge for him, like for us to make any money on him (if we wanted to he would probably have to go in to go onto be VVD levels of good, or at a worst case Maguire levels of good. Would people put him in the bracket?

You are right to say as well it's probably the last priority for the team currently. Mina is our best CB is we can keep him fit and I have a feeling Benitez will like Michael a lot (quite similar to Carragher/Hypia), Godfrey is very good and while Holgate has been written off, he's the age Benitez tends to like players in that range.

If we were splashing 50m on a CB I would expect some spending splurge.

I think Southgate prefers Mings as he has more of the 'big grock' quality when Maguire is missing. White isn't a tall centre-half, he and Stones would be too similar. Godfrey as the pure athlete and White as the 'brains' in a partnership is, to me, the natural long term England partnership after Maguire in the next three or four years.

I think White has a very high ceiling in terms of potential. You can easily see him being worth £70m in four years time, and I think it's a risk free signing in terms of the quality he'd offer immediately. He's not one of those signings that's a gamble IMO. I'd be all for binning off two of Mina/Keane/Holgate and bringing White in.

Do I think it'll happen? Unfortunately, no. I think this is newspaper nonsense.

It's probably needed, and I'd punt one of the ones we already have. But other areas are in much dire need of improvement. Especially if we're going to lash £50m on it.

Hmmmmm nah, not for me.

I just can't see a world where it makes sense to get rid of Mina and Keane mate. They were our best partnership last season, and with Mina we were averaging nearly 2 points per game. At Liverpool he tended to sit deep with cloggers and they fit the bill. I'm not sure White is currently better than Mina, and if we sit a bit deeper, even Keane.

I see CB as our strongest area on the pitch.

Wonder if he'll force the move. Won't rule it out.

Doesn't surprise me. I got laughed at a few months back for saying it, but in terms of signing top level centre-forwards that are remotely available this summer, there's Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and then next in the list for me is Calvert-Lewin.

Chelsea, United, City, Spurs (if Kane goes) will all be looking at him closely. I think he'll stay, but if a bid of £80m approx comes in it'll be an interesting one.

Fair points mate.

So you see White as an quite significant upgrade on 3 of our 4 defenders?

Easily.

He's actually better than all of our defenders currently, including Godfrey, but Godfrey is progressing really well and I view them over the next 2-3 years as equally capable of being proper top drawer.

If I were Southgate, I'd have taken Godfrey ahead of White solely because it was Maguire who was the injury doubt, but he's took White as he's obviously seen Mings as the cover for Maguire, which is fair enough.

I can't see many players being interested in playing for a mediocre team that can't offer Europe and won't be able to for sometime. I hope I'm wrong, but other than wages what do we offer?

Weve got Pickford Godfrey DCL all around the England squad (im not incl Keane).

If White went to Arsenal hes playing with Saka.

Join us and hes part of a quartet of England players and could build a partnership with Godfrey in front of Pickford for a decade.

Id expect that would be a key factor in his decision as you'd think Southgate would be watching us alot and hed be more likely to force his way into the squad permanently.
