And that was nearly twenty years ago. Not saying the kid won’t turn out good but we have positions we are absolutely desperate for class players so that should be the focus. Our only competition for Tim Cahill was Crystal Palace

Good player but isn't he a 10 ?Damsgaard did look decent.
More than likely journalists just making the majority of stuff up. That said our scouting system does seem to be absolutely awful. So, we lose interest in a deal that suggests that we may actually have some semblance of a scouting network and are instead now interested in a player that has had a great Euros??
Sounds about right. The evidence of the last few years suggest our scouting network is stealing a living.
You realise the Nunes deal was only suggested because NES taking over as manager was on the cards? Nothing remotely to do with any scouting having taken place. So, we lose interest in a deal that suggests that we may actually have some semblance of a scouting network and are instead now interested in a player that has had a great Euros??

FFS.
I need to stop biting.
"Replace" Iwobi/Sigurdsson? Who buys them/takes on their wages?
"We could still sell him and not lose money"? - Far from guaranteed. We bring a player to the fringes of the first team at least and he does nothing at all. Maybe has a couple of loans and flops at Champo or lower PL level. Who gives us £8m+ for him? You're taking a fee that sounds like a "bargain" now and assuming it will still do so in a couple of years. Not guaranteed. See: Lewis Gibson.
"If we signed 2 or 3 U21 players like that a summer" - Assuming you can find 2 or 3 with similar clauses, that's £16m-£24m out of an already limited transfer pot, in the hope that one works out. Any other clubs operating similar transfer policies? I doubt it because it sounds like even more groping around in the dark than we have been doing the last few years.
I get it. Another team signed a potentially exciting young player. They simultaneously signed a potential flop who could be turning out in the conference in a few years. Schrodinger's bargain.
I would say we need more hunger/desire than actual "class". Gylfi HAS class he just absolutely shirks responsibility and does as little as possible. Most of our players have class. Godfrey wasn't amazing regardless of what everyone wants to believe, he DID absolutely bust his butt in every single match which very very few of our players do.And that was nearly twenty years ago. Not saying the kid won’t turn out good but we have positions we are absolutely desperate for class players so that should be the focus.
Bizarrely in my opinion these two now look half decent and certainly better than some of the current squadEven Brands was able to sell Vlasic and Lookman
Damsgaard did look decent.

Half full ? Check your shoes aren't filling up.Decided to have a glass-half full moment.
Mina continues the good work he was doing with Keane at the first half of last season.
Godfrey picks up where he left off at full-back, pushing both Digne and Coleman.
Digne fully recovers from injury ready for the earlier games of the season.
Gomes benefits from a new fitness regime, rediscovering some of his pre-injury sharpness and contributing to the squad.
Pickford embeds his maturity, having his most consistent season so far. Romero is signed for cover and keeps us in the cups.
Doucoure and Allan form a combative and energetic midfield barely interrupted by injury.
James stays and continues to assist in tight games.
Bernard cameos at both left wing and No.10, providing some assists for teams in the cups.
Iwobi also contributes later in games, full of running and stretching tired defences.
Nkounkou grows into the season at both left back and left winger.
Richarlison and DCL continue up front but Richy chips in with more goals in a settled side.
Sigurdsson rediscovers his set pieces and cameos in narrow games
Kean is sold for a decent amount, replaced by a pacy right-winger.
Davies, Kenny and Holgate start to lose their 'youth' tags and are pushed on by our latest academy prospects.
Gbamin doesn't get injured again.
Tosun reprises his target man role, giving DCL a break in the early cup games.
Simms moves ahead of Tosun.
Gordon moves ahead of Bernard.
..Delph is loaned to Brentford for his leadership qualities.
Buying a player because he scored two bangers at a tourney would be very EvertonDamsgaard did look decent.
Nah, buying a player because he scored two bangers at a tourney at a wildly inflated price when they were linked to him last year at a fraction of that price, now THAT'S very Everton.Buying a player because he scored two bangers at a tourney would be very Everton
