Revisionism F.C

He was our best CB going into last season and we were all gutted when he got injured against Preston
As I stated in another post just now (you wouldn't have seen in fairness). He has the same problem as Mina and Keane, they have these moments where they go 'hey look, im a player' but have little consistnecy to back it up. All three of those including Holgate have been here long enough to show enough quality to say I am a footballer worthy of playing in a team in Europe. When he got that injury I thought it was frustrating as I dont like the idea of Mina and Keane together (no pace).

None of them have done that. I don't want it to come across that's it anti-holgate because I'm man enoguh to say hes had good periods, a few good games, but for me a few good games isn't good enough and that applies to Keane and Mina also.

We as fans can't expect to aim higher and do better with the same group who have let us down. It's okay to be impressed by someone at one point and then later down the line be disappointed they havent pushed on. 5 years MH has been here, his best season wasn't even with us it was with WBA in the Championship.

I'm not saying hes a terrible footballer. Im just saying he isn't good enough for a team pushing and aiming to be back in Europe. I just don't see what some see in him when he's never been consistent.

Distin was unbelievably athletic as well. Retires from Football and starts doing triathlons in his spare time. A good player was Distin but I wouldnt say hes any better or worse than what we have - perhaps benefitted from playing in a more balanced team.
I suppose being a milkman leaves plenty of time for triathlons in the afternoons.

Olise walks into our first team based on his performances this year though mate. Be it a 4231, a 433 or even a 442. He starts out wide right in any of those set-ups. You move James and Gylfi to the 10 spot in the 4231, neither of them feature in the 433, and both could be used as the second striker in the 442.

Admittedly, I'll be astonished if James and Gylfi are both still Everton players come September.
I bow to your superior knowledge on the lad. Be amazed if we found a buyer for Gylfi, though...

People talking about Olise like he’s incredible. Potentially could be decent but if he was as good as people make out palace would have had loads of rivals to sign him. Majority of the players in the championship could do a better job than iwobi that doesn’t mean we should sign them.

we need to continue what we did last summer and that’s focus on positions in the first team we desperately need filled, so starting RB, RW, couple of centre mids, then a backup forward. Once we remove most/all the deadwood we can start bringing in young up and coming backup players as their replacements.

Our only competition for Tim Cahill was Crystal Palace

Mina isn't wanted by the club, but unfortunately there's not a lot of teams out there who would be interested in him. An Italian club would be the most likely option.

Keane and Godfrey will form part of our defence next season.

The only reason Mina wouldnt be "wanted" is due to his injuries.

If Benitez goes into the season with Keane in the squad (or even worse, in the team) then i hope hes sacked by Xmas.

Id wonder if hed be trying deliberately to poorly perform as manager by playing the oaf.

Writing off a 24 year old centre half sounds premature to me.

You have been looking at Zat's posts too much.

I like Holgate?!?!?!

You're missing the point. It's not the PLAYER that is the missed opportunity, it is the combination of age, performance to date and price.

Let me try to explain my thinking.

WE need some wide attacking players - we agree on that, yes?

Option a) Olise. 19 years old, recent strong performances over the duration of a season in the Championship, £8m release clause.

Option b) Zaha. 29 years old, recent above-average season in the Prem, rumours of a fee anywhere between £40m and £70m.

(I freely admit there are other players in existence, I'm just trying to illustrate a point.)

If player a) fails with us after two years, he is still young enough ( at 21 or 22 ) that several other clubs will look at him and think "That was as much the club failing the player as it was the player failing the club. Just a bump in the road. He's worth a punt at £10m / £12m / £15m / whatever". In that scenario, we lose very little financially.

If player b) fails with us after two years, he's 30 or 31... he's a pace player (as are most in those wide attacking positions) and pace declines with age. The question asked by other clubs is "Was that just Everton using him poorly, or is he about to drop off a cliff? Ok, we can take a risk at a modest fee, or on loan, but that's it." In that scenario, we've spent £40m+ on someone who hasn't met the grade and we can't recoup anything close to the outlay.

Obviously if either player succeeds then brilliant, what a great purchase. And both MIGHT succeed.

The risk of financial loss in the event of failure, however, is far lower with player a).

EDIT: Given his age, you may well be accurate in saying the player preferred to stay down south. I cannot believe for one second that Palace was the only horse in the race.

Even if Olise 'flopped' hed give us the opportunity to replace Iwobi / Sigurdsson and save huge wages and bring in a higher fee than he would cost.

We could still sell him and not lose money + worst case he replaces one of the above two on the bench for a season.

If we signed 2 or 3 u21 players like that a summer then you just need one to work out.

5 years is enough time to judge a player. He isnt strong, he's mouthy/cocky without having the ability to back it up. He is not reliable. Ben Godfrey has shown more in a blue shirt for me in just one seasno.

Holgate has had small periods of showing something but hasn't shown anytihng to suggest he can do it consistently. The exact same can be said for Keane and Mina. Therefore lies our problem of having 5 centre backs and only one who has really shown to have real quality.

The one that winds me up is giving Keane a 5 year extension when we should have sold him.

Total ineptitude.

Mina would be class if he didnt have so many injuries.

Godfrey and Branthwaite high potential

Holgate needs structure i think...and to have a full preseason.

For me though we need a new partner for Godfrey

I think theres a bit of revionism towards Distin. He would be, head and shoulders, the best CB at the club right now at the same age as when he came in. The guy was an absolute unit, read the game well and was physically superior to everyone we have at the moment.

So, we lose interest in a deal that suggests that we may actually have some semblance of a scouting network and are instead now interested in a player that has had a great Euros??

Sounds about right. The evidence of the last few years suggest our scouting network is stealing a living.

FFS.

I need to stop biting.

"Replace" Iwobi/Sigurdsson? Who buys them/takes on their wages?

"We could still sell him and not lose money"? - Far from guaranteed. We bring a player to the fringes of the first team at least and he does nothing at all. Maybe has a couple of loans and flops at Champo or lower PL level. Who gives us £8m+ for him? You're taking a fee that sounds like a "bargain" now and assuming it will still do so in a couple of years. Not guaranteed. See: Lewis Gibson.

"If we signed 2 or 3 U21 players like that a summer" - Assuming you can find 2 or 3 with similar clauses, that's £16m-£24m out of an already limited transfer pot, in the hope that one works out. Any other clubs operating similar transfer policies? I doubt it because it sounds like even more groping around in the dark than we have been doing the last few years.

I get it. Another team signed a potentially exciting young player. They simultaneously signed a potential flop who could be turning out in the conference in a few years. Schrodinger's bargain.
