I don’t want a striker to sit on the bench. I want a striker who thinks he’s better than DCL and will fight for the starting spot. Townsend says he knows he’s not an automatic starter but wants to change Benitez’ mind, let’s find a striker with that attitude. Maybe someone who scored loads in a different league, I don’t know, it’s not my job to scout world football but as someone who’s watched a lot of premier league football and little else I’m confident we can sign better than Rondon.

It’s very hard to do though. Look at how much Spurs have struggled to find a back up to Kane. And we also currently have a back up striker in Kean. Until we know what is happening with him we can’t start going for someone else as he is the kind of player we would be looking at. If Kean goes then fine, but until we know that’s happening what are we supposed to do?

Mate, over 5 years we have the 3rd biggest net spend in the biggest league in the world, whether we spent it well or not is a different matter, fact is Mosh HAs backed us, Simple until you try your best to try and twist it with daft stats

I agree. We cannot fault Moshiri one bit as he has backed us and allowed us to spend. His choice of managers can be questioned. We would have to pay a lot more net spend just to catch up with the top 4/6 over the next few seasons also. We have to remember that all PL clubs are spending to improve so it is not so easy despite us being a high spender............................it does not guarantee anything.

Just for the record I think the 3 'uninspiring' signing we are making are 'sensible' signing. All are experienced players and add depth to a thin squad. If Benitez has ordered these signing then it is obvious he hasn;t got confidence in the younger players that quite a few are calling for. What is the point of drafting a younger, inexperienced player that a manager does not rate. We cannot just put a youngster in the team to appease some fans if they are not rated. We have to have some acceptance that we are in fact a mid-table team and we cannot expect many top players to be interested in us when all we have to offer is ambition alone.

He lost me the moment he tried getting sent off against Sheff Utd in a must win game for Europe then left the squad to fly off to S.America before the season had even finished.

Maybe it is due to a gordon lee syndrome...........basically he is a luxury player that will upset the balance of a team and the emphasis is on blood and thunder first.
I hope we can find a work around for James to fit in but I feel Benitez wants to initially solidify the team before becoming more expansive

When they’re adding to an already bloated wage bill they can still be bad signings regardless. We’ll know the answer in 12 months anyway.

A bloated wage bill, we’ve potentially knocked well over 30mil off the wage bill so far. If you count Bernard and maybe another 5mil if a certain player is sacked.

That’s not counting what has gone on the wages, with the 3 signings and yet manager abs his team, but I’d imagine we’re well on course to knock a hefty chunk off it this summer.

£220mil net spend over 4 seasons is not a huge amount when other teams were hundreds of millions of value ahead of the club to begin with.

Just remind me again, what was the overall spend, not nett?

Think you will find we are up there, and probably in the top five
