DOF is there to find the best players with whatever funds we have. We shouldn't need to spend £80m+ for two wide forwards neither would it take 30m and 40m to upgrade our RB and CM.

Again mate, if you could name me just one side who've been successful with a diamond in midfield in the past 20 years it would be much easier to get on board with your fantasy formation.

Youre asking why a formation that suits the players we have hasnt been effective in 20 years?

Its been effective overall when weve used it with players sub par for the roles + other premier league sides have used it in bursts.

Imagine when Moyes stumbled across formations and it clicked...lucky he didnt think "ahh no ones done this successfully in 20 years so it wont work now"...Guardiola doesnt seem to mind trend setting and neither did Wilder to get Sheff Utd into the premier league and up the table -- short burst.

Tbh i really dont know what Wide forwards you think would push us up into top 4 level for under circa £40mil each thesedays...

RB Lamptey, Emerson and Aarons would all be around £30mil. Im hard pressed to think of anything other than a massive gamble for under that level.

CM: We need a 'star' player in there...that wont cost buttons...again we cant afford to gamble.

We may strike lucky on another godfrey signing but id rather we stuck to 3, rather than punt on 4 or 5 signings on the cheap.

Anyway, im open to suggestions, @Stephenlloyd had some ideas for a 3 at the back where we also wouldnt need many signings.

But id definitely prefer now to sign 3 players instead of spreading the cash around...for me, aside from a right back we should focus centrally.

You say we cant afford to gamble in midfield despite you constantly naming 4 players that would indeed by a major gamble.

Anyway.

We wont be playing a diamond, not saying EVER, but nobody in the world would build a squad and totally ignore wide players.

Well, every signing is a gamble...but what i meant was that if we have £100mil and need 5 players then thats going to mean we need to take a bit more risk -- rather than the same amount on 3 players.

In theory we have more options and can be more confident that weve cast a wide net rather than scraping the barrel so to speak.

Btw, who are our current wide attackers?

Bernard -- some say hes best as a 10.
Iwobi -- i dont know what he is but he cant cross a ball
Gordon -- on loan
Richarlison -- best up top
James -- more of a 10 out wide than a traditional wide forward...also maybe best centrally

Its not like weve built an array of attacking tools...to go for quality its going to cost serious money to improve the wide areas...and the centre...and right back :)
