Everton Summer transfers 2021

The key thing for me is how much are you paying for such players. We were told the wages of Townsend, Gray and Begovic were between 100-150k combined. Even at the upper figure, it's 60k each for Townsend and Gray with 30k for Begovic. There's no fee involved. I know it's a long shot, but if you can lose Kean for a decent fee, and get a guy much cheaper to sit on the bench it suits. It also means, if DCL is injured, or needs a rest, he is at least a comparable style of striker so everything else doesn't have to get ripped up.

This will sound odd, but I'd rather have Rondon for free than Chris Wood for £40m.
I would rather Everton disappeared forever than any of this happening.

Do we have any scouts?

100% mate - if we had signed Iwobi for £1.5 million and Walcott on a free transfer we wouldn't be in this mess!

You're absolutely right really. And it would have helped both of those players, as they wouldn't be burdened with that pressure. If the fees, and perhaps crucially wages are reasonable then these signings can be quite useful sticking plasters to allow you to outline younger players to add in.

I don't think anyone would want to spend 40m on Chris Wood.

It's not like we have to choose between the two options you've given. Other players do exist!

Oh seeing our business, I wouldn't rule anything out!

And yes I do know that and it's certainly true. But I suppose at least we can get in and out of a free transfer much easier if the wages are reasonable.

I wouldn't run the club in that way, but if that#s the way they are going, hopefully we avoid overpaying.

Not convinced we bring anyone else in before the season starts. Would love to offload someone (Gomes, Mina, etc) but I'm also not confident in that happening. Everloan might be the way to go for the next couple of years

I can’t fathom what our scouting department could possibly see in Longstaff to make it worth us going after him…

which makes me think we’re deffo getting him

I know the setup is pretty small these days unlike Moyes who had a huge network working under him.
Pretty small set-up? why? Your scouting team is your future they should throw everything possible at it and it should be spread across the globe. The further away from the PL the better as you will get better value for money.

Someone else will know better @Nymzee or @Zatara maybe but I think we have 2 scouts in France, 1 European scout, 1 UK scout and then Gretar Steinsson overseeing everything. I could be wrong but its something like that. Moyes prior to being a manager spent a lot of time travelling about Europe watching games and looking in on training sessions (as lot's of coaches do) he made a lot of contacts from it and had people feeding him info from all over the place.

A year ago, Paddy Boyland in The Athletic posted this about our scouting network

“Everton’s network meets often, meets frequently, meets every week. They have scouts positioned in all the major European countries.

“They have an Eredivisie scout. They have a Belgian league scout, they have a scout for South America. They have a guy that straddles Italy and the Balkans.

“The reason they have that scout is because they’ve commissioned reports, independent reports, and they’ve found that the Balkans is one of the main providers of undervalued talent.

“So, yeah, obviously [it’s] important for them to try and find that in the current climate and then they also have guys, obviously, that work quite extensively in the UK. So, they meet and it’s quite a thorough process, actually.”

So it seems that we having a scouting network - which is ultimately getting paid to do absolutely nothing
