  • Sell Bernard, Gomes, Sigurdsson, Iwobi
  • Get a top notch creative central midfielder in
  • Sign two wingers
  • Sell one of Holgate or Mina
  • Get a quality right back in
  • Don't sign King
  • Sell Kean
  • Find new homes for Tosun, Delph
  • Sign a new striker
Selling 3 of our CMs leaves us very short in midfield, even after buying a new 1.

IF we sold 3, we would need at least 2.

Everything else seems sensible and prudent.

....look no further....step forward Alex Iwobi!!!
This really is the crux of why I'd like to see us do something other than play Iwobi wide right. We get so little useful play on the ball in the middle third. You look at how that effects someone like James too as he can't really impact the final third as he's too busy dropping to make things work in the middle.

I think this summer.
Ancelotti and brands need to buy for the system ancelotti is going to use amd stick to it the majority of
The time.

I think last summer was about getting legs amd
Aggression into the midfield. And when you consider the 2 we got cost 40mil it was good business. James on a free. Was too good to turn down with maybe money being tight. And Godfrey late on was obviously a brands one for the future signing, that came up at the right price.

Like you’re saying buy 2 wingers. I’m not sure we will play with 2 wingers. I think he needs to keep Richarlison and DCL together. And go from there. And obviously James as well, probably can only play behind them.

So 4312, 5212.
i think wing backs would be more suited to our players, I’m not sure ancelotti will go down that route though.

Kean (sadly, but it's sell him or a player we actually need)
Bernard
Delph
Kenny

Those four have to be out of the door, from contractual/wage respects and the fact they don't actually have to be 'replaced' (Bernard kind of, but one good winger covers that position and we know we need that).

If we don't keep King on, we'll need another central striker - albeit that may depend on getting Europe.

Iwobi and Gomes are players that could do with getting punted but we'd need to replace them in the squad. Selling Gomes would mean bringing in two central midfielders (just putting Gbamin aside for a min) or we'd be left short.
Nobody is taking Delph from us. Not with his wages and his injury record. He'll see out his contract in the treatment room.

Marco Silva who allegedly was involved in buying him played him what once or twice at number ten from my recollection. I was pushing for him to be given more games back then, but since then Iwobi hasn't even been producing on the wings and we bought James Rodriguez in and Sig is producing more. If James or Sig is fit he won't Iwobi won't be starting at number ten.

I'll always believe Silva would have kept his job if two things happened: Gbamin stayed healthy and he dropped Sigurdsson/Bernard for an extended period and persisted with Iwobi/Lookman.

Yep. The way we've played this season just makes me think we got our midfield buys totally wrong last summer. We theoretically improved the midfield but our performances have hardly been any different in there truth be told. I feel like Allan would have been a good 'final piece of the jigsaw' but maybe we've tried to run before we could walk. If the only way we can play is to sit deep and try and nick a goal from a set piece then I don't know why we didn't just get a Lee Carsley type to sit in front of the back 4 and break things up. Could have saved ourselves a fortune and had a player who actually suited the set up.
But I presume we didn't think Delph and Gbamin would be injured but that was bad planning too... One had a major season ender and one is never fit. I agree the make up isn't quite right yet but Allan and Doucoure are good players the issue is when either or both are out and the lack of mobility in our third midfield player ie Gomes or at ten with Sig. Or even not having a more mobile DM like a Gbamin who can sit so Allan/Doucoure can push on more.

The lack of mobility when Doucoure is out is a big issue (i'm not sure Allan is all that mobile) but the balance has been wrong when they've both played too, that's what i'm getting at. Neither of them seems to have the discipline to just sit and cover, we conceded loads of goals at the start of the season where midfielders ran on to balls pulled back to the edge of the box, because had nobody had seen the danger or tracked the run. We were overrun in midfield against Burnley, Southampton, Leeds etc earlier in the season when both Allan and Doucoure were in the side. It's difficult to know whether its the tactics or the players, but I reckon there's only been 1 or 2 games this season where you'd say we controlled the midfield; that's really disappointing after spending £50m to upgrade there in the summer.
