Everton Summer transfers 2021

Just laughing at this.
The modern way Everton have been playing has produced the worst football I have EVER watched a blues side play.
It’s a simple game, balls to forwards in the box make chances.
But Everton have not been playing in a 'modern way' whatever that means. Everton have just been awful. Nothing modern about it.

It'd like the fans that don't want to play passing football because of Martinez, without realising that he was really bad at it and set up without intensity and without pressing. There are some simplistic aspects to football that often get overlooked, that much is true. But it is not just a simple game and just slinging balls into the box is not the answer.

We need to play in a variety of ways. As I said in a previous post, teams that just cross the ball become very easy to play against.

True was it Koeman or Silva that done the same evertime pass wide and cross into box we were so predictable it became ineffective

Describing crossing as old fashioned is ridiculous. Of course we need variation, but Everton have been applying modern football trends badly for the last few years and it hasnt worked.

My own view is that they will never work for us because we can’t get the quality of players to make the system work.

The modern pass out from the back come what may, and pass around midfield in a non aggressive non threatening way has done my head in. I despise it in all its guises.

I want to see fast threatening direct football.

Right. I am not describing crossing as old fashioned, why are there so many of you that can't get your head around this? Man City score a lot of goals from cut backs (glorified crosses), or passes across the box (low crosses). There is also nothing wrong with high crosses. What is retrograde is to build an entire game plan around swinging aimless crosses into the box. That is old-fashioned 'swing it in the mixer' nonsense that will not get you very far.

We need pace and ball carriers and players in the middle capable of threading a pass, something we hardly see at Everton - look at that goal DCL scored against West Ham and how we were so surprised at the ball played to him by Godfrey because our team seldom plays the ball like that. If we are decent at crossing combined with the other things, we will be a good team.

You complaining about teams passing out from the back is also nonsense. It is good to have the confidence to bring the ball out from the back and go through stages of transition, just like it is good for players to keep possession. You are doing exactly what I said in the previous post about Martinez in conflating aspects of the modern game with the fact that we don't do them very well. Playing out from the back allows our poor players to make mistakes, passing sideways allows them to hide, instead of having the ability and bravery to pass through the lines. These are not problems with the modern game, they are problems with our players and their coaching. Just pumping the ball down field or slamming crosses onto the box will not help either. It may give some of you the feeling that it is better because it appears faster, but we will still be a terrible team. We need to improve our playing staff and improve our style of play.

We don’t seem to have a transfer budget, so unless we can find a few modern players for zero pounds zero pence, I suggest we make the most of what we have.

I agree that aimless crossing won’t work, but that is not what was happening. It was accurate early crossing that created chances. This is something else we didn't see enough of last season. We we’re bereft of attacking threat, wedded to a possession game that failed in every respect. We have ploughed that furow for four or five years with a variety of managers and a raft of different personnel. It has failed.

It’s time to try something different.

No. The recruitment failed. That can be addressed. If you are talking about making Gray and Townsend put a few crosses in, fine (but we will be found out with that very quickly).

Signing McNeil, which was the start of this whole conversation, does not help with that. That is actually using our budget to spend a hefty wedge on a player who just wants to fire aimless crossed into the box. This would be a waste of money and would not improve us. We would then be going down the same route of signing limited players for large sums who limit our ability to improve.

I am very pleased we won today and, although I didn't think we were very good, we comfortably won a game we were losing at half time, which we never do - which is great. However, I think people are really getting ahead of themselves and getting too excited by thinking just throwing crosses in is the answer. We played at home, with our fans back, against one of the few teams in the league that I think are comfortably worse than us. They had also just lost their big grock CB, who I would suggest would defend crosses better than what they had anyway.

I watched him for Chelsea v Everton in the youth cup. He looked good and was always highly rated. Chelsea lost 3 youngsters for cheap fees. I think one of the others went to Leeds, not sure about the other one.

Yes I was thinking why aren’t we trying for one of the youngsters if we don’t have much money. He seemed to play wing back for Chelsea’s youngsters. But at 18 in a flat back 4 against Richarlison, he did really well. He won’t at Southampton long

Can see why we would be interested in McNeil - a younger, quicker Townsend with arguably better crossing and more technical ability.

More crosses = more goals.

Erm
Looks a prospect but lets not go overboard.
He had s very good 1st half tbf.
2nd half he dissapeared.

Very one footed but he’s a much better footballer than Townsend and gray. We need more players who are technically comfortable on the ball and not scared and brave

Livramento dominated that first half against Richarlison and also had some very good attacking runs.

Second half there werent really any successful attacks down our left flank bar one cross from Gray and a passing move which they cleared.

Someone to watch this season, he looked well suited to our team and with solid pedigree.

Townsend and Gray as expected really.

Townsend works for the team and has a good cross on him. I said before that he would be decent on a 1 year deal. Two years is too long.

Gray, my opinion hasnt changed. Has loads of pace and put in a couple of crosses...perhaps if we had scored from one id be more positive.

Based on the game

1: Sell Keane and possibly Holgate (though Holgate could be backup for Godfrey).

2: If were going to play the 2nd half style then Gray and Townsend should be 3rd / 4th choice wide players with Richarlison floating around DCL.

Definitely need a right back and two wide players. Id take McNeil as he may not be the quickest but he can play with the same intensity as we saw 2nd half and is young and a good player.

Rafael got a grim Newcastle squad playing decent stuff, no matter how bad we are Newcastle fans would kill for our squad.
Get past P and S rules this season and watch us go from strength to strength.

I think the 'Everton' style is to play quick football whether thats going direct to the forwards / wide players or quick passes forwards on the floor...

...its not slow tiki taka football.

Its obvious that you cant just knock it long to wingers to endlessly cross the ball in, and its also obvious that you cant just pass the ball quickly down the centre...

...it has to be a mix.

What you get from McNeil is primarily someone who looks to play forwards and can cross the ball (really well) and pass (really well) while also working hard defensively.

Hes more of a Limpar than a Kanchelskis. @Dwight K Schrute named Wamangituka who, for example looks to be more of a Kanchelskis than a Limpar.

What we need is 3 players out wide to rotate with different skill sets and a 4th experienced or young player as backup.

United in the early 90s had Giggs, Sharpe and Kanchelskis with Beckham emerging. Thats a variety of different types of wide player.

Im not saying McNeil is as good as those players were but he has a valuable skill set and a left foot which could be considered as 'similar' to Kevin Sheedy. Hes also got 100 games under his belt and has shown that he can play quick football.

If we are to play Richarlison as a 'support striker' / floating around DCL then we need to have better players than Gray and Townsend out wide.

For me, McNeil would be a good player to have as one of three wide players to rotate. As hes young, he should develop and improve, also he will be playing in a better side.

A season with 2 goals and 5 assists with Burnley could well become 4 goals and 10 assists at Everton.

What i would say though, is that if we signed him we would still need 2 more starting wide players to rotate with him.

£30-35mil seems reasonable to me.

Not a great way to evaluate things this.

Gray was decent when he moved out wide. He was decent in the first half when he drifted wide from his weird second striker type position. He is a wide player. He'll do alright when playing wide.

Keane made an error and that's obviously bad but he was our best defender aside from that once again and really shouldn't be sold with no one coming in as a replacement. The summer started with no real need to touch the CBs and it remains that way. This isn't FM or FIFA and having some degree of continuity matters. Hopefully we can find a combo this year but having all the options is good.

Fwiw Saints did not have a single chance aside from the Keane mistake. That's probably more likely to carry over than Keane giving the ball away for 1v1s with Pickford.

After watching Livramento, if someone told me he was an England international i wouldnt be surprised.

18 years old, cost £5mil and was Chelseas player of the year in their u23s(?).

Amazing that Chelsea just turned out Reece James, Tariq Lamptey and now Valentino Livramento over 3 seasons

He'd have been a good move for us as hes the right age to come in to rotate with Coleman.

We could have probably got the money back from selling Kenny as well.
I don’t think he got forward enough for my liking.
