We do need to play a system that allows that though if that's the plan. It has to be three in midfield.

I think the advances in football in modern times mean we probably won't be seeing too much 80s style again but who knows you watch Barnsley and it isn't far off. That's a team living on data and numbers too.

…it was but it’s still football, it’s still 11 v 11, it works so why reinvent the wheel. The old 4-4-2, I think there’s variations on a theme and I don’t get hung up on systems but you don’t go far wrong with that.

They're too of the 5 or 6 worst sides in the league. It's not that it can't work a little it's that it is hard to get it working at an elite level. Only really Atletico have even come close since Sir Alex realized Pep would tear them limb from limb if he tried 4-4-2 in those finals they lost.

…as I say, I don’t get hung up on systems, it’s more about what you do with the ball and what you do when the opposition have the ball.

Colin Harvey was a brilliant coach, he played with two strikers but when the opposition got the ball one of the strikers dropped goalside to support the midfield. It’s mega hard work but they are paid lots of money to work hard.

Madrid have played it a lot as well. But for the better teams 442 is just an organised defence, with the two centre forwards either pressing the centre halves in more aggressive formations or the centre midfielders in more defensive.

Attacking wise there is often little difference between 4231 and 442... And putting numbers on formations when for most teams there is loads of movement when attacking anyway defeats the object to be honest
