Not sure about that, I mean we finished 18 points above them last season.

Add those 18 points to our tally and we finish 2nd.

That's some difference.

Fans turn their nose up at certain players because of their current situation/who they play for. It was like with Demarai Gray.

It's not that he plays for Brighton for me. It's that he misses ridiculous chances.

We don't play two forwards, so while Maupay would be OK as a second striker a la Steven Naismith, we don't play one. If we did, it's a complete system change to a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 and then there's no role for Richarlison, nor really for Gray or whoever on the right.

So the signing only makes the remotest sense if he's brought in to replace Richarlison in a system change, and while Maupay has some qualities to his game, that switch would be a ridiculous downgrade.

Maupay is a decent player, but we need to be signing that type of player before he moves to the prem, not when we’d have to pay £30m+ for them. They’re not worth that. I’d like to think we’ve learned from Sigurdsson, Bolasie, Delph, Williams etc.
I like Maupay. He's fun to watch and causes trouble but he's not good enough for Brighton.

Think Maupay would be a great signing - pace, can fill a few positions and can slot. Best days ahead of him. Can't see it happening though.

When looking for a striker it's a fantastic strategy to look at the club's that massively underperformed their xG

Just checked - his goal conversion is better than Calvert-Lewin's and Richarlisons for the past couple of seasons.

If Calvert-Lewin is injured, we have nobody.

Disagree.

We need another striker.

One we know can score in the league. One with pace and one we know we can resell, too.

Thats because everyone has a hard on for Potterball who's Martinez MRKII mate.

8 goals or so a season is perfectly fine for a squad player off the bench - we aint a top 4 side who has elite forwards on 200k a week happy to sit on our bench.
He didn't get 8 goals "off the bench" though did he? He got 8 goals whilst playing as a guaranteed starter.

Scored for fun for Brentford in the Championship.

Brighton paid a lot for him. Double figure league goals first season, 8 last season, 2 in 2 already this season.

He's 25.
Has pace.
Can play upfront, behind the striker or on the wings.
Established in the prem, doing pretty well in a Brighton side.
Has a bit of tenacity/nark to his game.

For the right fee - all day long.
I'm kind of in this boat also. He may be the next in line option after Correa and Cunha. My guess is he would play behind DCL with Richy and Gray on the wings... Then Iwobi and Townsend are your bench options.

Is it what we all dream of? no

Could it be a solid, balanced attack? yes

Problem is Brighton will overvalue him.

If we can somehow get rid of Kean for £30m and the direct replacement is Maupay, fine. I think we can do better with that money, but it's an upgrade given Kean is useless.

But if Kean stays and this is our transfer outlay, it'd be a really poor use of money IMO. The right back has to be sorted first. If we're spending big money on one or the other, I'd rather get a proper right back and loan in a striker as a punt.

I don't mind it in theory, because you get players who know the league who you can judge as having 'done it' here. It's why I thought Doucoure was a smart signing, had no problem with that one.

But Maupay? McNeil? Not for me, especially Maupay. At least with McNeil you can argue we have the set-up with DCL for him to thrive a bit more in a better team, but Maupay is bang average. Shane Long is the perfect comparison - a ratter of a striker who runs for days and does little else.
I hate it to be honest.

Bolasie/Delph/Siggy/Iwobi a grand total of around 100mil all with PL experience.

Wrong ages in general; we've bought in mercenaries on their last contract. Players aged 23-25 are fine with this strategy every now and then as long as not the exclusive strategy.

Iwobi was just ridiculous. There was nothing whatsoever to suggest he should have been bought, but Brands gonna Brands.
