Hes one of the most comfortable CBs I've seen with the ball at his feet! He Carrie's it brilliantly, great passing range etc.

Its not a weakness of his. A weakness is hes still not quite aggressive enough as a CB, and has this habit of not blocking shots.,

For a lad who's 23 though, hes excellent. People go on about that Gabriel, whove I've watched a bit for Arsenal. Hes miles behind Godfrey for me
He carries it well fair, but he struggles against pressure and I'm struggling to remember any examples of the passing range which isn't necessarily a thing I'm arsed about anyway.

This is what I mean though, I'll see these posts for years to come. It was the same with Holgate who has also always been pretty questionable on the ball but was talked about like he was a step away from Beckenbauer until probably this season.

And also if there is one thing I do think he does well it is block shots. What he needs to do is stop the guy from shooting it to begin with. You can't live off of last ditch interventions.

You really don't understand football, do you?

Stop blocking the ball Ben, its bad, stop attacks before they start Ben.

Christ.

Big Oils digging out of Godfrey is proper weird.

I suppose some did go overboard by saying he would go the Euros and hes easily our best CB, but to constantly dig the lad out when hes been 1 of our better players this season is proper strange.

It's an odd statement, as normally he likes younger players.

I actually agree on Godfrey. I think he has world class potential, but isn't world class. Hes has great games, but at CB still think he resembles features of a midfielder playing in there. I'd say his best performances have been at fullback. As you can probably see, I've not got any blinkers on Godfrey. However, to say hes bad on the ball seems a very unusual analysis to me. Hes very comfortable on the ball for a CB.

He's only been one of our better players if you're fine with a LB who is a genuine 0 with the ball and I didn't really like that.

I think it is bad defending to let teams shoot because, and maybe I'm misunderstanding the game here, but most goals happen because of a shot. If you can stop the shot from happening in the first place well... it is pretty hard to score isn't it?

I'm not saying blocks are bad!

Apologies to Jamo on catching him with a stray here, but this is about Holgate from 17/18. Anyone saying these things now?

For me it is the same thing. We're seeing the player we want to see.

lol lol lol lol

If as block isnt stopping a shot, what the hell is it?

Nar, I'm out.

But if you arent going to include passing range, or his ability to carry the ball forward, how are you measuring him being bad on the ball.

Holgate is also good on the ball. I completely agree people go overboard sometimes (both negative and positive) and hes not Beckenbauer but he is good on the ball. His weakness is not quite being big enough.

As for Godfrey, yes perhaps should stop shots coming in. I still think too many shots get past him though, thinking Leeds at home for example. Plays a bit like a midfielder at CB, which makes sense as he was late to the position.

I look at him at 23 though, and tbe performance at Anfield, and think there arent many who could perform like that.

I thought he was our worst player at Anfield. We're just really far apart here, as I am with most on Godfrey, so no real need to go further.
