As well as two new players with pace for the right hand side. Having a mobile play maker /box to box player who can work from deep, drive us forward and who has a shot on him would really transform our team and how we play, a Kessie type. It would help James so much too Gomes and Sig are too slow for this league.

I think I see what you mean. My feeling remains that consistent development of players remains our only chance. I don't see us buying a competitive squad of players who come in at the level we'd like. No it won't be a magical 5 year run but if you stick to it and do it well we've got a shot.
Yeah I’m not disagreeing with the idea of buying (some) players to develop. The point is more about what they develop into. Not everybody has to - or is realistically going to - develop into a truly elite player. As I’ve said before, players like wood, Wilson, bamford, king etc have been effective strikers in this league. If you can bring a player in who plays at their level, scoring 10 goals a season for 3 years while we become European regulars and then sell them on and use our improved position to upgrade then it’s fine. There’s this obsession with us signing players who go on to be world class which, considering we’ve had about 2/3 players in my lifetime who could even enter the conversation at that level, I find a bit bizarre.

Part of it would most likely include Stones types who reach a higher class after leaving us. That's not a bad thing. Stones was never better than maybe slightly above average here.

But the point is we don’t even need them to do that. If you put a 25 year old Coleman and arteta in this team I reckon we’d be top 6 pushing top 4, and neither of them were ever anything like world class. You can be a very effective premier league player without needing to increase in value 17 times over.

Arteta and Coleman both reached a seriously high level at their peaks. But I know what you mean.

Godfrey is the right profile to be signing regularly so that we don't have to pretend the one guy we do sign in that category is good and instead can focus on the ones that do improve.
Anyway, I'm not against your plan.

I feel we need a mix, I suspect Brands wasn't totally happy with the ages we bought at last summer.

So yeah, for me we need more Godreys and less Allan's, but I did say that Carlo ain't here for squad maturing.

So you probably need to shelve your ideals for now
