Everton Summer transfers 2021

JWP is another one of those players that may be better than most of what we have, but that doesn't make him what we need to get to the next level.

I also think people still see him as a "kid", when he turns 27 this year. Not old by any means, but he doesn't have the room left for development that some assume.
He’s ok,
But didn’t really stand out for England in recent internationals against average opposition.

Id be gutted if we wasted money on him

Have we been linked to him? Think he’s a very good player who would improve us. Actually passes through the lines and gets about the pitch.

Why have we continually bought players like him. Does the scouting network or manager not do enough research on these players. I know the games changed but you look at some of the players the likes of Peter Taylor found for Cloughie and you can list a load more managers or scouts who found good players. They'd spend weeks watching them play, find out about their temperament, their fitness, how often they got injured and so on. It just doesn't seem to happen with us anymore.

Well we tried poaching Walsh from Leicester, he found Vardy, Mahrez, Kante and others and assembled a starting 11 for about £28m for them. He couldn't work his magic for us.

I don't think the physicality of the league has been Bernard's issue, he can stand up for himself. he seems to lack stamina, can only play full on for 60 minutes. He didn't really play as a winger for Shaktar, he was more central and he hasn't played there much for us.
I think you have to look at the value of the transfer as a whole, yes we pay him over 100k a week, £6.2m a year, according to Sportrac, which is just under £25m over the course of his 4 year contract. If we had paid a fee of £15m for him and paid him £10m over the same time frame would people even mention it? Based on the fact his former club paid £40m for him and his potential, people were generally made up with signing him at the time, as the perception was we had beat AC Milan and West Ham to his signature.
Agreed. If he were actually good size wouldn't be an issue.

Not knocking Bernard but I'm never quite sure why people say this as if it's a good thing or proves anything. The perception of a load of people who've never - or at best rarely - seen a player kick a ball is really not even slightly relevant to whether it's a good deal or not. Fans will generally be excited by the signing of exotic sounding players who are talked up in the press as being in demand and bargains, it means nothing. What matters is whether a player actually produces the goods when they arrive. Bernard hasn't been the worst signing of recent years, not by a long shot, but he hasn't been a good signing either. Paying him £120k a week or whatever it is when he's only started 43 league games in 3 seasons is not ideal.

mainly because, if we had not signed him at the time, every time he would have played well for whichever team signed him, fans on here would have fumed and said we are poor and cant sign any players. Again the £120k per week is meaningless, you have to look at the overall value of the deal. He's on slightly more than most of the squad If we had signed another player in his position for a fee, we would probably have paid a fee between £20m and £30m and pay the player between £90k and £100k a week. So we would have spent more. Look at what we spent on Bolasie £44m and Walcott £38m in fees and wages.

Again though, if you think whether fans will moan on an internet message board is a key consideration of whether you should sign somebody, there's a pretty reasonable chance you're not doing it right. Not quite sure how you come to the conclusion that what we pay him is meaningless either, but nevermind, it's probably not the thread for it.

He’s also not a type of player we need. People watch these players and have no understanding of football.

ward prowse is not dynamic or athletic, he’s good at what he does but he’s not what we need in the middle of park

Yet people want us to sign another plodder to sit in the middle of the park because they looked at his stats on t’internet

But if he was real quality, he wouldn’t still be at Southampton at 27

Not necessarily mate - plenty of decent players are playing at none Champions League sides look at Grealish who's been at Villa forever.

Not saying he's world class but we dont even have Europa Conference to offer players - the aim has to be buying players who are good enough to take us into Europa Conference / League then continue to build from there.

The only thing he lacks is raw pace (although he isnt slow like Gomes/Gylfi) however when Doucoure is fit its not really pace we need in the midfield thats more out wide where we have Holgate/Coleman and Iwobi/James who offer us little.

A midfield 3 of Doucoure, Allan and Gomes was fine at the start of the season it was only having James and a slow Coleman behind him out on the right that saw us struggle at times.

If you added JWP but then added two fast players on the right you dont need some speedster in midfield providing Doucoure plays.

Its also a myth that Sigurdsson is great at set pieces his corners and freekicks are bang average these days.

Michael Olise from Reading get him now before his price goes through the roof. Still probably cost a nice chunk of change, not too much though as he'd probs hand in a transfer request. Also like lookman, if he didn't make it here he'd have sell on value.

Be an absolutely brilliant signing for us JWP if we could get him. Exactly what we need. I could see Southampton asking something silly for him tho like 55mill
