Nunes played over 40% of minutes in the league for Sporting last season which isn't exactly a low number considering the talent Sporting have in midfield. Overall he played the equivalent of 19 games throughout all comps. Not bad for a team who would tonk us
I have just had a peek.

1259 mins so around 14 games worth of minutes...he started 11 of them in centre mid.

For comparison:

Paulinho joined 1st Feb and has 1073mins.

18 year old backup forward Thiago 1507 mins.

Hes the definition of Sportings' Tom Davies...

Not saying he wont be amazing / rubbish in future...just saying im not currently wowed and need another season to judge him and see if he progressed.

….saw £25m quoted, totally agree on the ‘ball carrying type’, maybe evident also In Iwobi, Gbamin purchases that haven’t worked out.

Leak also has really good size & athletic scope.

I think that is fair overall. Gbamin we have obviously been very unlucky with and Iwobi to date has just been a massive disappointment and has rarely looked like he wanted to commit players with the ball (though strangely on the few occasions he has has looked quite effective).

So overall a bit of bad luck and a bit of poor selection, but you can see the plan was there. Last summer we went a bit away from it with James and Allan who just aren't that profile anymore. I think it's positive that we try to move back to that.

Just a couple of points though mate. Firstly Sporting are better than Everton currently, so their Tom Davies is probably better than our Tom Davies. Secondly he looks to excel in mobility compared to Davies (who appears a better passer). So he kind of gives us more of what we require in the midfield.

Yep...the road ive gone down is that hes a squad player for sporting and he 'should' have broken into their team over Joao Mario if he was decent premier league level.

So i think he needs a season of starting somewhere to show that level.

Thats the gamble...take him now and risk the money or wait a season.

It's a fair enough assessment, but I'd also be a bit wary of it mate. Mario has played at a number of top clubs, and his style suits the Portugeuse league well, and he offers some much needed experience to what is quite a young Sporting team. They are also a team with power and pace throughout it, so a lad who's main skill is his mobility is probably less of a key part.

We need that mobility. You see it a bit with Doucoure who is quite limited in lots of ways, but gives us a lot of what we miss.

But if we wait a season and he blossoms, we won't be able to buy him. His value will rise dramatically and he'll go to Spain, or one of the top German teams, or one of the sky 6.

So either we gamble, or we don't. And at the moment we have a yawning chasm where our midfield depth should be, so not gambling is probably a bad idea. Get this lad in for £16m / €18m, sell Delph and / or Gomes and let's get cracking. You cannot stand still in football.

*EDIT: just rewatched the England v Croatia game... Absolutely no surprise that Kalvin Philips was the stand-out performer. If Leeds want £40m for him we should pay it, no question at all.

You haven’t seen him Zat. Just admit you do not watch Sporting Lisbon matches from your creepy beach hut in Cambodia.

Trouble with that is Zac, if he gets another season and he does progress, even wows, he will probably be off to a bigger club, or even a much bigger fee, wages. Brands was supposedly renowned for unearthing hidden gems, I know :) , so maybe this is one, not a massive fee, if he fails young enough to sell on, worth a gamble on my view.

Rule No 23: Never buy a play on the back of a good Euros/World Cup Performance, for that way lies Besic.

Yeah we need mobility but id say we need a DM rather than this chap...

I also dont think. Mario is any good but you make a fair point.

Tbh if were getting someone from Sporting id want Amorim.

Rather pay €20mil for him then back him.

All true. I reckon Philips is £60mil and Rice £80mil...£40mil no chance.

Meanwhile Kamara at Marseille....Guimaraes at Lyon...

Everything about you disgusts me.

Goodbye.

He'll be 23 in august...not old but to still be waiting for a run of games and consistent top performances...

If he flops...24 and whose buying him?
