except for a lot of the games we went on to not win meaning whatever barry was going wasn't really positively affecting us.

it is liking praising the centre half for being commanding and still losing one nil every week.
The fact it wasn't working was down to tactics - playing with 2 deep midfielders for no reason at home against weaker sides who park the bus was Martinez 101. Teams just doubled up on Barkley and it didn't matter what Barry was gonna do, as his only option was sideways or backpass. In more open games his vision and awareness paid massively, but teams figured our amazing plan (or lack of plan B, rather) pretty quickly, so his effectiveness dropped quite a bit.

In a good, balanced team, he'd still be good. You don't forget to play football overnight.

I agree. And you can't hold one player responsible for a team. A player can be outstanding and have no blame attached to him and still be losing every week (which is not the case here in any event)

But again why take that gamble? If we are signing 30 million pound midfielders then why gamble? Plus he is getting paid far too much to be a squad player in all honesty. Could those wages be used elsewhere? Especially when we can replace him in the squad with a cheap fella like that Gueye who will still be the same role but for a lot less?

That is the point about Barry, he is in the same position as Distin was for us, we gambled one season too many and then look at the result. Personally i don;t want us to gamble, i want us to make sure we are covered by the start of the season.

Yours was the consensus opinion at the end of the 2014/15 season. Look what he produced last year when 'his legs had gone'.
