Everton Transfer Thread 2016

I'm really interested in what went wrong with the Mata & Witsel deals.

I have read, with interest, @The Esk writing about Everton's financial situation and completely trust his info on this is true and quite accurate. I also believe he genuinely trusted whoever his sources are when he was told we had a serious interest in both above-mentioned players. However, it's clear as day that we were never actually - in real life - close to signing either. Which leads me to ask the question: How come you were so confident they were signing, even going as far as to say it had all been agreed on both counts?

This isn't an attack on our moderator; I am just interested in how it seemingly went from "we're 100% signing them" to us signing neither and no proof anything had ever been agreed in the first place.

Fingers crossed we can get rid of a handful and sign a couple of good players before the deadline - if we want to jump up the table we badly need it..

An excellent post mate and all the more reason why it's odd people attack him. For me it's really interesting stuff.

From what I get from @The Esk Witsel we'd agreed a fee with Zenith which is hard to do and Witsel had initially agreed. He then re-considered or wanted a little more time (given the Euro's were on) and in the end reflected on not too.

Mata seems like he'd shown an interest in talking to us but United never wanted to let him go.

3 games. 2 against pretty poor teams. It's far too early to judge.

Not sure it makes a difference who we play. You need a keeper to win you points against every team and so far stek has done it. Doesn't make a difference if you make a great save from Ibra or Rondon, you still have to save it

I'm really interested in what went wrong with the Mata & Witsel deals.

My reading of it, and I am just speculating, is that Witsel and Mata have decided to hold out for offers from other clubs because they believe moving to Everton would be a step down or bad for their career progression.

You can see why that would be the case. We now have the Moshiri backing, buy we're not able to offer Man City style money, and these guys will know the project could take a few years to get off the ground - some of the key years of their career.

I think the same is probably the case with Joe Hart, that's the impression I got.

Anyway, if towards the end of the transfer window these guys haven't had interest from any champs league clubs, there is still a chance they'll sign.

Absolutely mate. Obviously we'll get some braindead idiot attacking me for putting the question out there, but that's not a problem.

Agreeing a fee with Zenit doesn't seem too unrealistic, esp given the money we spent on Bolasie, but it must have been one almighty u-turn by Witsel for fellow forum member to be so confident of a deal happening. Shame really, as we badly need a second strong defensive midfielder.

I don't think we were ever anywhere near likely on a deal for Mata. I think the press put 2 + 2 together with Mourinho joining United and our friend's sources being suckered in to thinking he was joining us. Same as the Mourinho-is-interested-in-Everton rumour; never in a million years.

Witsel wanted juve and Mata is currently starting games for Utd. That explain it?
What isn't explained is how come we haven't even gone after a player "like" those two since. Most managers identify weaknesses in the squad and then try to get the best player to fit the profile.

Witsel is nothing like Gueye. Who are we in for that is like Witsel?
Carvalho is nothing like Gueye. Who are we in for that is like Carvalho?
Mata is nothing like Bolasie. Who are we in for that is like Mata?

It seems like we were in for a completely different type of player for those positions before Walsh came in. In fact it almost looks like the kind of players Martinez would have gone for.

Maybe that's not how it works but it seems strange.

Walsh arrived, Koeman got a better look at the squad, things changed.

Still a few days left, mind.

This chap as @The Mighty Quint has said is 'no joke'.

If Deulofeu is 'the Assister' (Trademark Lukaku) then Brahimi is 'the Dribbler'. Was brilliant at Porto but it seems like he knows hes too good for that league.

If we had Brahimi, Deulofeu, Mirallas and Bolasie for the wings then thats quite a selection. Lennon and McGeady sold.

The thing with Brahimi though Zat that has been mentioned is he has a huge attitude problem, after being a fans favorite they turned on him because of his attitude, he has had run - ins with his manager, I read a piece on him that said that he expects his team mates to do all the leg work for him, then give the ball to him, goes against what Koeman expects from his players.

Gibson was given a contract so we could get a price for him, no way on earth will he be anywere near the first team when Koeman has finished doing his business.
As for McCarthy if it's true he wants out and we bring a midfielder in don't be shocked to see him go.
Why would Gibson agree to a move after just being given a contract? Would he not have preferred to have the choice of where to go to and the signing on fee?

Agree with everything you wrote mate.

I think Witsel could potentially still happen, after all nobody else has come in for him as far as I am aware. That said, even if we signed him now, it doesn't validate the "he's ours" claims, as him agreeing to join us at the last minute after no bigger clubs came forward wouldn't have been agreed with Everton five weeks ago, i.e. "I'll join you if Napoli don't come in, k?" It'd be a case of us being initially rejected then him, again, performing a gigantic u-turn and agreeing to a deal. As of today he has agreed to no deal (otherwise he'd be an Everton player, obviously).

Really hope we don't sign Hart!
