Everton Transfer Thread 2016

The fella earns 300k+ a week, if hes screwed, theres no hope for anyone!

Quite. That was the point I made earlier. He has a big decision to make soon. Hopefully he can make it from a position of serious financial security, not from, relative to us, financial necessity.

Hand on heart i'd love him here next year - whilst he is still able to contribute seriously as a player, think a move home would actually give him a spark back he has lost, won't stop the inevitable decline but may give him a season or two that he can turn back the clock.

No, but Rooney isn't a footballing mercenary like Eto'o had become. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Whatever his history with leaving us, he is still an Evertonian. He comes to our games, he brings his kids up to support us.

If there was an opportunity to bring him in, as an experienced head who's won it all and played at the highest level since he was 18, then yes, I think we'd be stupid not to go for it - and I can guarantee you Martinez would want him, just as he wanted Barry.

Rooney was a footballing mercenary the second he left Everton. The rest of your post is moot because all you're saying is 'eez a blew!'

Rich lists always need to be taken with a pinch of salt but Rooney is reckoned to be worth anything from £50-100m depending on what you read. I don't think money is going to be an issue although I take your point @roydo that you never really know.

One big positive of Rooney coming back for me would be that I reckon Barkley would stick around for another couple of years. Although we could just give Barkley Rooney's wage and he'd probably stick around then too!

I would have Rooney back in a heartbeat if the deal made financial sense. I reckon it could happen but think it is still unlikely this summer.

He's only 30 lad fgs. Barry's been our best player this year and he's 35.

Past his best, yes, but the level he's at now would still have a very good impact on our younger players.

You can't question his attitude either, that's ridiculous. One thing he does have is his dedication to carry on playing. He has never at all had an athletic shape. Heck, he's in better shape now than he was when he came through with us.

Your talking about turning down a potential opportunity to sign a player that has won all their is to win at United, broke the goal-scoring recored for England, and who I think many believe (based on Dunc's testimonial and the fact of his own testimonial being against us) would still love to be back here and would thrive.
The leadership and game smarts that Rooney would bring, both on and off pitch, would be great. All of the midfielders have commented on learning from Barry and the same would apply for Wayne.

My concern would be that, although he is only 30, he does seem to have lost quite a bit of pace. Barry was never fast and so he developed early on skills to read the game to compensate plus he is in a position on the pitch that it is easier to add a partner with legs to help out. Having a speedy striker can be so critical on counter attacks and just not sure Rooney will be able to fit the bill for the length of contract he'd probably be looking for.

He's always seems to prefer playing central than on the wings so his likely best position is probably as an attacking midfielder. But if we signed him how to integrate him and Ross in the same team? Perhaps in a 433 formation but Martinez doesn't seem to like that formation much.

No he wasn't at all.

He left us when we were in a dreadful way financially, and we had finished 17th the season before. He was also probably the best young player in Europe at the point after an amazing Euro 2004.

If Rom, in the summer, after we finish, say, 8th and he has an amazing Euros, leaves us (baring in mind we are in a much better financial position now than we were in 2004) would you say he is a footballing mercenary?

And my point isn't that he's a blue. I'm just saying that that's one of the many reasons you can't compare Rooney to Eto'o.

Rooney was never rapid mate. The last few weeks he's started to show how good he still is. I'd take him back in a heartbeat if the deal was right. He's a real winner. Whatever has happened in the past he still loves the club, and he still has a lot to offer both in terms of his quality and what he would do for the younger players.

And, he's no where near old really. 30 is nothing. Rooney could easily play a different, deeper role for us until he was 34/35.

Rooney is overpaid and clearly past his best. The only reason we should ever think about signing a player like that, and why a player like that would want to play for us, is sentimentality. So be it, but only if it's him, and not us, subsidizing the sentiment by agreeing to massive wage cuts. As in much less than what Lukaku, a far better player, is on. Otherwise we could get much better value elsewhere.

He was pretty rapid when he broke through.

Agree he'll probably need to drop deeper to prolong his his career like fergie wanted him to, cant see us getting more than 2 decent seasons out of him though

I'd describe him in his pomp with us as explosive. Over 10 maybe 20 yards he powered past players. After that he's not slow but he doesn't just keep pulling away. A good example is the first goal, he just about keeps up with Ronaldo but you can see Robaldo has a bit more left in the tank as he's sort of boxed in and checking his run.

I love a good counter to be fair

Cant see him leaving Man U if Mourinho takes over as I can imagine he would love the chance to work under him. Also, Mourinho was desperate to buy him when he was at Chelsea so he's obviously a fan and will believe he can get him back to his best level.

If LVG stays or a different manager comes in, then I think there is a decent chance he might come back.
