Everton Transfer Thread - Summer 2020

I'm not trying to kick off here, I was just saying you can't really say 'posters, ha what would they know' when the answer is obviously just as much as you. I only posted the comments in response to you posting something from facebook, just to point out that I certainly wasn't alone in thinking he was defensively poor in that game. You were the one who went off to find 'evidence' to back you up, don't blame me for doing the same.

You're obviously welcome to your opinion, I just disagree. I don't think Coleman is good enough defensively against the top teams now either, and I don't think bringing in a right back who might only be of any use as an attacking option in certain games is a great move personally. I wouldn't be surprised if the club disagree though.

Fair enough mate.

I know Sidibe isn't good enough defensively like, my memory of that Southampton game is of him playing well tho, so it surprised me that you picked out that one in particular.

In an ideal world we would bring in an expensive new right back but thats not gonna happen.

So for me Sidibe on loan again and Coleman playing against the better sides would be the way to go next season. (Coleman is past it too but hes definitely the better of the two defensively speaking)

Only seen the sub text, but an article in The Athletic mentions the players being promised big signings when agreeing to the wage deferrals...

Not really, though there is nothing in there that says there won’t be:

It is understood there was reticence in some quarters to the initial proposals, mainly based on widespread media speculation over the pursuits of supposed big-name targets in the summer transfer window, including Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes. “It took a while and went quiet for a bit,” says a source. “Why would the players agree to pay deferrals while there was the prospect of big-money signings?”

In the calls led by Coleman, however, it was explained to the squad exactly how deferrals would positively impact other aspects of the everyday running of the club.

Looks like we are skint doesn't it. Really hoping we can get someone in midfield I cannot abide Morgan, Sig, Delph or Davies anymore... We need some physicality in there desperately. I would even try Beni at this point the names mentioned are either dross or badly average.
I'd bring Besic back before persisting with these clowns.

I can understand that it's going to be difficult to get rid of the first three, but I have no idea how Davies finds himself in the 18 most weeks.

No idea what to expect in the transfer window, but this wage deferral business suggests that we were a bit hasty with the, 'We're fackin' rich...' song.

The reality is though, Mo Besic can't get a game for Sheffield United. I don't think he can physically handle the league.

Well the randoms who post on here are just the same as the randoms who post on Everton's social media. I know the bloke who does a lot of Everton's social media stuff and he is absolutely not a footballing genius. I'm also seeing the irony of you saying I shouldn't listen to other people's opinions on here but yours is boss.

You're right though, we should just accept that he's rubbish against decent teams. They only make up a microscopic 30% of our league games, being dire in them is fine.

It' hard for us, as we still think of ourselves as a big club, and we get mocked everytime we go to Anfield with the haven't won their since 1999 (which shows Liverpool fans still see us as a big club as well, as they are surprised we are at the point) and these big games are signifiers that we are not. However as you say, the far bigger problem we have had is that we don't win enough games against the rest, particularly away from home. We've had numerous seasons now where we win 2 or 3 away games. Write the top 6 off, the 2 or 3 against the rest is poor. If we really want to differentiate ourselves from them, we need to be winning at least half of those games. That return in results will be a lot quicker and easier than trying to win games at the top 6.

If we were to say win 7, draw 3 lose 4 of those games we would probably add 10-15 points on our end of season total. That takes us last season from 8th to 6th. This season we probably finish 4-6th. We can still lose most of the games away at the top 6 teams and show real progress.

For Gomes he is sort of emblematic of this really. There's no doubt he's played brilliantly in big games, but he doesnt follow it up every week. The lad I saw at Anfield run the midfield, should be the best player on the pitch most games and the truth is he isn't. Maybe it's mental with him, but more likely I think it's tactial. He has all the attributes to beat the press when sides come at him. When players are cuter though, stand off him a bit etc he has been found wanting.

I know you're into your cricket a lot, and the similarity to me is with the one day game/test matches. Hoggard was a very good test match bowler, but once you removed the swinging ball, the 3 slips, the batsman who don't defend decent balls, he struggled.

Maybe Gomes works it out, and I hope so. But he hasn't yet.

Sheffield United's midfield is also a lot better than Everton's, and none of those mentioned would get a game there, either.

He's far from the answer, and his injury record has been less than impressive, but we're talking about offering competition for some of the poorest players in the division.

Mad if you think we're spending much this summer - I think it'll be mainly loans and frees, depending on how much we can recoup for the dross (LOL)

Still seems to be some folk about who think due to Covid every club will be potless..... but Everton won't be affected.

Tried to say as much in another thread but accused of being an RS so gave it up as a bad job as I'm far too long in the tooth for that nonsense... but if them lot are skint, then you better believe we are too.

I just don't think he can handle the PL. He had a couple of good games against Manchester City about 4 years ago. I've seen very little else from him.

Take it more as an example of how desperate I think the situation is, rather than a vote of confidence in a player whose career never really got off the ground.

If next season is to be played behind closed doors, I fear that this team is in serious trouble.

Agree with the majority of your post, but not that last bit.

Their owners have barely spent a penny of their own money since they took over

What difference is closed doors likely to make? I'll be honest, I think we will be ok, as there are going to be some teams, without enormous financial backing who are going to be in serious difficulty (ones that haven't had wage deferrals yet etc).

Off the top of my head, Southampton are in big trouble if the takeover doesn't happen and will have to sell to survive. If the Newcastle takeover doesnt happen, they are suddenly in massive trouble, and have next to no assets. West Ham are probably another one. There will probably be a handful of poor teams who will just get worse. Next season is going to be really interesting.

I agree in principle though. One thing Moyes did well, was take relatively discarded players and mould them into something. I actually think Ancelotti seems quite adept at that, as a small positive. I think if we had a young coach who wanted to play a specific way, it would be big trouble as we may not get those players.

This will sound odd, but what an opportunity now for Baningime, for Adeniran etc. These lads have won it all in the 23's and ultimately not been given much of a chance. They are not young lads anymore, 21 years old so physically should be able to cope with the league. They are both physically strong and this really is an opportunity for them to put a marker down. As you say, the bits I've seen of Baningime as a 19 year old are competitive with some of the lads you mention.
