....I think power, pace and athleticism are a vital requirement for those defensive positions, especially given the back four can become exposed in a 4-4-2. The mid-80s team is a decent blueprint with Stevens, Van den Hauwe and Ratcliffe having Rolls Royce engines.
I see us sitting deeper at the back if im honest mate, i think that is the Italian way and i have noticed we are deeper since Carlo came in. A deep compact four and the ability to transition the ball from the back line to midfield or over the top on to pace will be the skill set we are looking for in in a center half in my opinion, its why i think we are looking at Thiago Silva in my opinion.
In central midfield we want an aggressive presser, a defensive shield who can close down or mark space, someone with an engine who can get forward and back and also high press and who can transition play, like Allan or Ndidi. A Reidy type.
On the right im open minded, i can see the logic if they are having a sniff at Fraser, i see a lot of balls over the top to DCL, Richarlision and to the wingers and going direct at stages, pace on the wings always helps in that method of playing. Or else you are looking at someone who can cause problems and create and make the ball stick up there someone like Everton.
For me i think we will go with a back line sitting deep protecting the house, not necessarily the speediest, but who can transition out to midfield or over the top early. A central midfielder who can anchor, press, shield, but with an engine to press high and contribute offensively and either pace on the wing when we go over the top direct or someone with good technical ability or trickery to make the ball stick or create when it get up there early. Plan A, is keep the house safe and then direct in my opinion with quick transition over the top and back ourselves with DCL, Richarlison and pace on the wings, Plan B is we will play a pressing game, getting crosses in etc.
