Everton Transfer Thread - Summer 2020

Without intimate knowledge of the finances, I'd guess the more cost efficient move would be to keep Keane and just by 1 CB. I just don't know who we can get that is good enough and willing to come in with little chance of playing. If Keane wanted to go maybe just rely on Branthwaite/Gibson.
I don't see how that would be more cost effective at all. Keane would be on higher wages, and this time next year he'd be down to the last year of his contract so we'd almost certainly see him decrease substantially in transfer value. I'm not someone who plucks names out of a hat but I find it hard to believe there's not a decent enough experienced centre half in a European league who would be willing to get a bit of a pay bump and play in the PL for a couple of seasons, even as a back up. We're not talking about a world beater here, just a competent player who can do a job.

I’m not looking for sell on value in 3/4 years from now just players that will improve us come August when season kicks off.
I may be wrong but I don’t see next season being much different to this in terms of the likes of Arsenal Chelsea Spurs Utd improving much, so we must be ready to pounce from the first game next season.

Does the W stand for Walsh?

Nonsense. Dortmund spent half that, if even that, for Haaland.

Scratch that, It was a quarter of that

We wouldn’t have got him for that price though, We’d have had to pay 3 times that to persuade him his agent etc to drop to our level.
We can get away with possibly paying less for a striker if we improve the players around them.

Nothing to do with dropping to our level, all the top clubs wanted him particularly as his buy out clause was so low. As I said earlier his agent sold him to Dortmund as they were agreeable to the agent receiving 80% of his future sell on fee.
Dortmund are effectively loaning him until Mino Raioli decides that he wants to cash in.

I said we should sign 2 centre backs. One to be first choice and one to be fourth choice. That inflates the number of players you're signing, but it doesn't mean you're throwing too many players in at once, because one of them is only back up. You're missing the point. I was saying that we could afford it because we would be selling Keane. So the starter is bought with the Keane money, and the back up is a cheap squad filler who is good enough to play when needed. I don't think 3 centre halves is enough to get you through a whole season in normal circumstances. I'm amazed we've managed it so far this year.
You're right, if we sell Keane we'll have to sign two centre halves as it doesn't look like Gibson or Branthwaite (or anybody else for that matter) are going to step up to be 4th choice CB next year. However, I'm not sure we will sell Keane, he's lost a lot of his desirability whilst with us and given his fee and wages we could only really let him go for an eight figure sum and with someone willing to pay his entire wage for us to manage ffp. I suspect we'll keep Keane and sign a left footed CB, maybe Gabriel as @Tofeenut has been reliable in the past.

I don’t understand why Gibson or branthwaite can’t step up to be 4th choice cb? And the same for our young players in other positions? This is what’s so wrong with our club and a lot of others we should be giving the younger players the chances to be squad players rather than buying squad players for stupid amounts. I hate it when people say they have paper thin squads or not enough players in certain positions it’s nonsense they have academy players who can step up on the odd occasion and more than likely play with more hunger and fight than your average overpaid squad player whose happy to pick a wage by sitting on the bench. We have that many flops and expensive ones who have become squad players it’s stopped us giving the youth a chance

From a financial perspective - I could live with Gibson as 4th choice CB and Keane sold for £20-25 million providing we sign a proven top quality CB to partner Holgate with Mina a steady 3rd choice cover/rotation option.

more importantly, get rid of Pickford. A bloody liability.

The Pickford thing is such a hard position tbh. He's not good enough, that much is abundantly clear, but selling him for close to what we got probably won't happen and keeping him around to warm the bench seems like something he'd get whiny about. Not sure there's a good solution to this one aside from him just playing better.

If he’s not good enough then we get rid, if we take a lose so be it. All 11 positions are important. But a class keeper is like having a 25 goal a season striker.

Ancelotti & Brands didn’t buy him, so I don’t think they will hesitate it getting rid, though I think he will definitely get one more season.

The like a 25 goal a season striker thing has always been a mess of a comparison, but yeah it's important that we get someone who can make some saves. It's just complicated by Pickford seeming like a character who wouldn't take well to being benched.

I think there probably is something to stability and only bringing in a few players at a time, at least based on some of our success under Moyes.

I think about some of our successful transfer windows like when we bought AJ, Howard and Lescott.

I hope we sign no more than 4 outfield players this summer.

We need to sign fewer players and only quality ones.

You can make a lot of DCL-style punts without breaking the bank, and it only takes one hit to make the whole endeavor profitable. I'm not sure that Carlo is the guy for that kind of Dortmund-style project, and I agree that players we spend serious money on need to be limited in quantity and high in quality. However, I do also think that we probably should spend some capital on low-price, high upside youngsters given the thin nature of the squad. They'll get top-flight playing time out of necessity under a world-class manager, so we should be able to get the pick of the litter.
