Everton Transfer Thread - Summer 2020

I think there probably is something to stability and only bringing in a few players at a time, at least based on some of our success under Moyes.

I think about some of our successful transfer windows like when we bought AJ, Howard and Lescott.
It's a balance and sometimes a hard one to strike.

On one hand you can be like Villa this year or us before Koeman's second season. Sign too many guys and end up with no clear plan and a bunch of confused players trying to do unfamiliar things with each other. Continuity matters and it can easily be killed.

But the other hand is you have to consistently improve. If you don't bring in guys to make the team better you will fall behind everyone who does. This is a big part of why Spurs have struggled. They signed no one two summers ago and then this past summer brought in two central midfielders who both struggled. Suddenly they hadn't improved for two seasons and they've fallen off as a result.

I think we have a man in Brands who understands this. My guess is 4 to 5 signings and no real outgoings beyond the obvious Niasse/Martina brigade. Maybe one of the CMs and one of the reserve defenders beyond that.

I think we will buy 4 who walk into the team. And a couple of youngsters, who add to the squad like a LB.

If you look at the starting 11 Sunday, next season with everyone fit and new additions, I can only see 4 players at most getting in our best 11.

I think we will see one or two surprises leaving imo. They have talked about the size of the squad and working with a smaller group. A lot will depend on Europe I suppose.

I agree about the 4/5 players coming in. Hopefully we buy players for all the positions we know need improvement. RB, CB, CM,RW and these players should be the best we have and walk straight into the team. No point in buying 10 and 6 of them being no better than what we have

The Pickford thing is such a hard position tbh. He's not good enough, that much is abundantly clear, but selling him for close to what we got probably won't happen and keeping him around to warm the bench seems like something he'd get whiny about. Not sure there's a good solution to this one aside from him just playing better.
I would take the hit myself and give him to Fleetwood or somewhere as appropriate.

I don’t understand why Gibson or branthwaite can’t step up to be 4th choice cb? And the same for our young players in other positions? This is what’s so wrong with our club and a lot of others we should be giving the younger players the chances to be squad players rather than buying squad players for stupid amounts. I hate it when people say they have paper thin squads or not enough players in certain positions it’s nonsense they have academy players who can step up on the odd occasion and more than likely play with more hunger and fight than your average overpaid squad player whose happy to pick a wage by sitting on the bench. We have that many flops and expensive ones who have become squad players it’s stopped us giving the youth a chance
If they're good enough, they can. Obviously neither of us have any idea whether they're good enough yet, but it's pretty clear that our managers and coaches haven't thought so, particularly about Gibson, because he's barely even made the bench. People have said the same in the past about the likes of Pennington, then he's played and it's become immediately apparent that he's not a PL player. The whole 'he couldn't be any worse' line is always trotted out, and almost always wrong.

It's also a case of doing what's best for the player (and the club in the long term). Branthwaite is 17. Do you know how many 17 year olds have played regular PL football at centre half at that age? It's a hell of an ask for a lad of that age to play against the best strikers in the world. Would Gibson be better off playing 5 or 6 games for us or 40 games in the Championship? There's a bit more to it than you're suggesting.

Only way we sell him is if he has a great Euros and Lampard gets involved.

I'd only go for 4 outfield targets and a new keeper in the summer.

1 x Centre Half
1 x Right back
1 x Central Midfielder
1 x Right Wing/Inside Right Forward

1 x Goalkeeper

We have signed way too many players recently. We need to let our younger players showing promise continue to develop. We need quality over quantity. And we need to leave open the pathway for other young players.

By end of March, we should know what budget, pre-season and contract renewals.

I hesitate to buy now with the uncertainty with budgets and future events.

We have highlighted the Centre Back, Central Midfield and Right Winger position plus a few question marks over right back with Coleman/Kenny/Sidibe but given no guarantee of Europe as of today we can only assume what target would be attracted to us without European Football.

The Europa League is seen as a distraction and a lesser competition but teams who have gotten to the latter stages have positively used it as a platform to bigger and better things. We need to readjust our thinking to this competition because we could seriously win it.

Supposed targets so far
Centre Back - Gabriel
Centre Mid - Allan

Which leaves Right Back and Right Winger so a push into Europe will see us attracting a better player.

Gibson will be part of the first team squad next season. I can see us signing Gabriel and selling Keane, then we have Mina, Gabriel, Holgate and Gibson as our squad centre halves.

CB - Gabriel
RB - Max Aarons
CM - Kalvin Phillips
RW - Lozano

GK - Dubravka
