Everton transfers that didn't happen

The Guardian that's right hahaha. Unrelated but thanks to a wikipedia edit years ago one of our centre backs was in the paper as Joseph Chicoazul Yobo.

Yeah we were definitely after Defour around that time, both playing for Standard Liege as well. I remember being gutted we hadn't signed him and didn't know a thing about Fellaini at the point we signed him.

Moutinho was one I was excited over, like many other fans. I remember that Europa League game at home against Sporting, with a daft kick off time (5:15 on a Tuesday I think) and he was obviously playing for them, towards the end of the game, he got subbed and the whole ground gave him a round of applause and I remember a guy sat behind me saying “hopefully the next time we see him here, he’ll be wearing a blue shirt”…
I had forgotten about the odd kick off time, I seem to recall sneaking out of work early or claiming to have a doctors or dentist appointment!.
That would have been some midfield though with Arteta and Pienaar also, always wonder how close we actually were to signing Moutinho, when the “delegation” went over It looked so promising for a while, now that term will forever conjure up images of the muppets on bicycles, alas.

It was less hassle for me, I was off school for February half term!

It felt like we had a few of those in that 3/4 year period in particular, where it seemed like it was close, or as good as done, then the next thing you know, they'd signed somewhere else. In Moutinhos' case, didn't he rock up at Burnley a few years later?

Defour was at Burnley for a while, had completely forgotten that until you mentioned it, according to Google “In September 2022, Sean Dyche named Defour as the most talented player he ever coached in his ten years at Burnley”.

Apparently Moutinho is actually still playing too, he’s 38 now, still a youngster compared to Young!

Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe because the fax machine was slow and there was a kid from South America, Sosa maybe? Anyway they couldn’t get a work permit

I seem to remember some Gbamin lad, apparently all the paperwork was done and medical completed but then he just vanished.

Yes I meant to say Defour 🤦🏻‍♂️ Surprised he ended up there when he would’ve been at his peak.
