I noticed that too. I mentioned it in the Barcode match thread. While we were shocking at the back...we were far more direct getting forward. Minus the Wigan home game (I think) we seem to have created more chances against Newcastle than we have against any other team this season...we just never killed the game off.

Looking back at Mikel's poor run of form he really was doing his best impression of Vinny Sideways at times with his non-penitrative passing.

A mixture of our attacking second half play against Blackpool and the movement shown in the Newcastle match I think really would see Birmingham chasing shadows for much of the match tomorrow night.

I think Davey will admit the win was a big bonus Saturday, as much as we needed it after Tuesday, as ultimately it was the formation which needed to show it could work and hurt teams which by and large it did as lucky as we were defensively at times. Whilst Davey may have now found a system that shows it can work, we just need the players to show on the pitch that they've got rid of the gremlins and they can now beat some of the teams that park the bus for most of the game.

It's interesting that you noted we had less passes than normal at St James's. It's quite likely that we were more direct, with Arteta running with the ball himself, rather than having him in the centre, where he frequently switches the ball from one flank to the other and back again without actually penetrating the opposition's rearguard.

When a link player like Fellaini is not in the side it doesn't surprise me. He attracts the ball like a magnet.

Thats actually a good point Dave. So if the Belgian Stiff is still an Everton player after the summer will this affect Mikels form again or will playing Mikel wide alleviate some of the issues we've seen with his play being stiffled by Felli's dominance.

Yeah, that was genuinely a case of the forwards being wasteful (and Harper playing well) as opposed to earlier in the season, when we snatched at the few chances that we did create.

As a team we seem to be moving the ball much more quickly and purposefully. If we attack like we did in Newcastle against Brum, I think they're in for a torrid time. I hope that Cahill's return doesn't disrupt the momentum that we seem to be building.

The back 4 and the protection from the midfield needs tightening and sorting to stop me form thinking that wont be a possibility.

I don't think they'll pose much of a threat, but generally you're right. Brum will most likely park the bus. It will be a good opportunity to see whether having Arteta on the left makes us more penetrative.

Lookin forward to gettin over for this , more than i was this time last week anyway .

MY XI:
---------------HOWARD---------------
HIBBO------JAGS----DISTIN----BAINES
OSMAN----JOHNNY-RODWELL--ARTETA

I dont think there is any chance of this as we wont get the space we had against newcastle. Brum will play deep, look to frustrate and nick a goal either on the counter attack with martins or jeromes pace, or off a set piece. We are gonna need players like arteta and osman to unlock their defence cos we are not gonna have too much room to play in behind them.

Same team as newcastle except heitinga for neville.

I'm expecting them to be about as poor as Sunderland were recently. They seem to be pretty ravaged by injury. If we move the ball quickly and get inbetween them, rather than playing the ball infront of them, I think we can do some damage.
