Fair assessment of the game that. When we upped the tempo/urgency we looked a lot more potent. Very much a work in progress, no pain no gain etc. Agree about Kone, he looked more direct and powerful than Jelavic, he also seems to be able to stay on his feet.

...I think this is the point for me, we didn't play with the same tempo as normal at Goodison. I just think if we had a bit more ooooopmh we would've broken them down.

As you said, complaints should really be directed at Steve Clarke not Martinez. TBH, if I was Clarke I'd hang my head in shame at those tactics.

I can't blame him too much, they looked like they were giving it a go at first but it was quite clear that from the 55th minute or so they were playing for a point. Spoilt it slightly but we've seen worse. They look a worse team than last season that's for sure.

Thought Barkley looked very good again and was the main orchestrator for us. He's the kind of player who can break down the dreaded two banks of four, given more time to find his feet. But let's be honest, he doesn't look out of place at all!

Exactly. Encouraging signs I thought!

I think the introduction of Kone definitely helped that. It was like having another winger/attacking mid on the pitch. If I recall correctly the Executioner's Bong did a good piece on Kone and how he had one of the highest passing completion rates of any striker in the league last year, and it showed yesterday I thought. He's got something in a striker that we haven't had for ages; direct running and good dribbling ability, he's got that balance and poise similar to Mirallas and Barkley. I hope he starts next week.

Personally I think he's going to be a steal at £5m.

We have played 2 very poor teams and failed to beat either. If we want to improve on top 6 finish, that is not good enough.
