I doubt anyone has a problem with your fans claiming your team is on a similar level to us, because with you 2 points ahead currently, clearly it is...You have done well this season and look current favourites to get 7th.
The issue here is that Wolves have been up for 1 season and suddenly think that as a club they are now our equals. We've seen this before from the likes of West Ham and Southampton etc and both of them are way more established PL clubs than Wolves.
Whilst Everton have sadly under achieved over the last 30 years we have been one of 6 ever presents in the PL era. Wolves have been in the PL about 5 seasons in total. You've sunk as low as the 4th tier in front of crowds of 4K, and were in League 1 a few years ago. You talk about the pre PL era as if you were on a par with us then and compare your glory years to ours when youve had 1 good decade in your history with decades of lower league football either side.
Your fans need to reign it in a bit. It's one thing getting to 7th in this era (Burnley, West Ham, Southampton have managed it), it's totally different getting consistently in the top 5 or 6 and the last non "Big 6" team to do it was ourselves who are well established. We're struggling massively to get near it now, despite the 3rd highest net spend in the league since about 2014.
Enjoy this period, your club is progressing but your fans need a reality check.
Yep, thats a fair point about club vs team. Probably got my wording wrong, i was talking about us as a team. At the same time, a lot of comments i see from here sound like our fans. Had a fair bit of success in the past, but really, havent had any real success for decades. While i'd still say you are a big club, you arent as big as you were. The longer you dont have that success, the less and less having a successful history becomes. This one will probably get me into trouble here , but you havent really been a top 6 team regularly for over 20 years looking at league positions. In the premier league era, you had a 5 year spell between 1994 and 1999 where you broke the top 6 regularly. Apart from that, it looks like between 8th to 10th has been your position.
Without sounding arrogant, i cant see why we need to reign it in or get a reality check. If you cant get excited and dream a little when things are going well then whats the point of following a football club? We arent West Ham, Burnley or Southampton. It would be difficult from an outsider looking in to grasp whats happening at Wolves, but we really wont be going away. I said this or words to this effect earlier, but if FFP wasnt an issue, we would probably end up going down the same path Chelsea or Citeh have gone down and would be doing it now. We are now extremely well run these days, we have great contacts and we have the financial backing and very ambitious owners. I think we have a fair chance of doing something fairly decent. From the outside looking in, i get the feeling if you have spent that much money and you arent real top 6 challengers then something is pretty wrong somewhere at Everton. Hopefully this Brands will get you running better as a club. We have seen ourselves when we were in the championship, have seen having money to spend and being a bigger club doesn't guarantee success.
