No, a manager's job is to make the best side he can with what he has. It's about getting players on the pitch in roles they can fit into, and getting players to form partnerships.

You must be having us on.

There are some international managers (Capello) who believe in jamming the "best players" onto the field regardless of how well they play with each other to create a cohesive unit.

Side note for the Americans: can Brek Shea not hire a decent hair dresser? His hair looks like someone goes at him with a weedwhacker.

Saha scored 4 in one game against Blackpool, which counted for the majority of his goals, before he got injured again. Beckford notched at fairly regular intervals throughout the season. Neither can be directly connected to the presence (or lack of) of either Cahill or Osman. Our problem is that our strikers don't contribute enough goals, so we need a regular source from midfield. Unless Osman or Arteta can take over that responsibility, we need Cahill somewhere in the side.

You could say our strikers need a regular supply of good chances from midfiled, which they don't get from Cahill.

Brek Shea can do what he wants with his hair. He's that awesome.

(He's our Neymar, hair-wise)

Don't be ridiculous. The manager's job is to find a system that accommodates and suits his best players. So you're going to leave out a player who has been either top scorer or second top scorer for us in every year that he joined the club and replace him with a player who has had one purple patch in 10 years and never scores more than about 5? Ossie wasn't even amongst the top-assist providers last season.

One purple patch? Osman's scored 7 goals in 04-05, 07-08 and 08-09. His goalscoring record isn't too bad, and he plays alot deeper than Cahill does. He wouldn't be my first choice behind the striker, I think he's much better as a CM, but given a full season in that position, who knows how much goals he'd score?

Goals rarely come from nothing.

Ergo, you need service. Do you think Cahill would notch so many if we didn't have Baines, for example?

And if you replaced a creative player like Ossie with Cahill, then you'd have one less player to provide the spark.

I honestly can't believe the stuff you're coming out with tonight, as despite us disagreeing a lot in the past you've always come across as knowledgeable and intelligent. But this "put all your best players on FFS. It doesn't mater what position!" approach is borderline comical.

I think Vellios might be conserving his energy for the second half because he is not running as much as before. But when he gets the ball he looks great to me.
Is it just me or Rodwell is playing good?
He passes well clean and doesn't loose the ball ( as far as a can remember)

Enough Cahill arguments. It's spoiling what is a fun night.

Positives:

Barkley is the scouse Messi, as me and my cyber twin/mirror image adonis Nords have said.
Anichebe looks like a football player, rather than a startled Hippo on an icy lake.
Mucha is actually quite a good goalie.
Vellios looks intelligent.
