saw osman's goal on star sports half time newcastle v bolton.

it was a screamer. really pretty diving header. get in there! stuff you dream about the night before the match.

Just got back from the game. £27 (£1 off for a restricted view. I had a post right in front of my nose, but second half I moved to a different seat and had a better view. Anymore doubts why we need to move from Goodison was finally nailed there and then.

Ok the game. Bit disappointed that the side was the same side that completed last season, ok I know Baines was injured and Pienaar was not match fit, but why didn't Jagielka play? Why pay £4million for a player and not play him, seems an expensive squad player to me.

Ok my assessment.

GK - Tim Howard
Did well, disappointed with his kicking though

DF - Tony Hibbert
Solid as always

DF - Joseph Yobo
Looked shaky for some reason, not his usual self.

DF - Alan Stubbs
Man is a machine

DF - Lescott
Marauding Maradona moments, distribution though was straight out of the School of Unsworth though.

MF - Carlsey
Seems to have the knack of getting something in the way to disrupt the play, surely though we would have benefited more from Jagielka.

MF - Neville
Did well first half

MF - Arteta
Magic, disappointed that he never went for goal late on

MF - Osman
Scored a good goal, but for me is always the weakest link

AT - Johnson
Very little understanding of where Anichebe was going to play the ball, but I will get to that soon. Unlucky not to score, but for me doesn't do himself any favours when he goes down far too easily for me. He is not going to get a penalty, so if its a foul or not, try and stay on your feet Andy.

AT - Anichebe
Not sure what it is about this guy, but I don't like his attitude. I think his work rate is laboured, he is not aware of the players around him, he goes down too easily and seems to have this chip on his shoulder. Ok, so he scrambled in a goal, but again his overall play is sadly lacking. What Moyes said last season is still apparent today.

Also when Pienaar showed some energy and looked for the one two, Anichebe seems to lack the skills to perform the one two, and stopped the ball, killing the pace, turning and just running into trouble.

For me, he is 4th place striker behind AJ, Vaughan, Faddy. Unfortunately the other 2 are injured so we are kinda stuck with him unless Moyes signs Yakubu.

Don't say I am being harsh on the lad, but he isn't going to make it unless he ups his workrate and show's some more energy. I for one hope he does, because he does have something, but not really what I expect from a Premiership starter.

Subs

Pienarr
Looked nice and tidy, energetic, skillful and had a hand in the second goal.

One thing though that bugged me, and that was the immense fog of tobacco smoke that greeted me when I exited the stadium into the fresh air. Not nice.

With regards to the result, very happy. But we need signings and quick, because I never saw much improvement on last season, and that worried me.

heehee, his run, he should have shot on this right foot tbh, wouldve been the best goal from a defender in the season lol...

And i think anichebe needs motivating, thats all, i recognised this match when the fans cheered him on, and after his goal his determination rose, he was running faster, chasing the ball more etc...

...hes a good player, dont knock him, imo he played better than johnson today, he just needs to learn how to get past the defenders, because all he did today was in stead of running up the pitch towards the goal, he waited ofr the pass...

...saying that i loved the continuos passing between anichebe, osman and lescott in the 1st half...

From what I've seen so far.. (a bit into second half) I'm most happy with the way our players didn't let a dubious decision (both right and wrong) from the referee get to them. Ignoring it and instead take the anger and turn it into positive energy.

Fair enough I suppose. I just think the fact that he is playing, and Moyes is looking at another striker, should be all the motivating he needs. I don't think he played better than Johnson today though, that's my opinion.

I'm not knocking him, but I just think he has a chip on his shoulder, but that could just be him personally. Spoke to a guy in the Chinese and he agreed with me. I think he is a super sub more than a starter.

Oh and by the way, that sickly sweet smell was evident as ever, as was the racist remarks and rather sick comment about Heysel.

just watched the game with jags...

Arteta is just masterful out there

I felt like if we play this way vs a good team, we lose... but we'll def take the 3 points

nice and surprising goal by Osman (still dont like him much)

Timmy played well in net, he had no chance on Wigan's gem of a goal

very uninspiring play as a whole, but a win is a win is a win

Very nervous play I thought. Hopefully it's because it was the first game of the season.

As Maverick said, if we play like this in our next game we'll loose. Tottenham will be very hungry and looking for a revenge of their loss today.

Only players that really stood out for me offensively where Arteta. AJ need a goal to get more confidence, some chances today he'd score on in other games... and it's been a while since he scored for us now.

clearly not the best game, although i think we did what we had to do. i agree they are awfuly poor, and as for the excessive long ball football......

arteta was quality, and needs some help from someone, some of killa's tackles, blimy....

i thought anichebe actually did quite well, he seems to constantly pick up knocks but maybe thats just him.

We looked solid in the air at the back, though neville and carsley have absolutely no creativity at all.....

at thew end of the day, three points, move onto spurs game...quick....

I agree with all of this but one point that seems to have been missed is the fact that we only had 39% possession, that is just not good enough especially when they are the long ball team. I trust that DM may change things round a little for the next game. On the postive side three points from the first game of the season has to be good, COYB(y)

as mav said, bit of a shaky start against a non-elite team, but three points are three points and getting three points is key...watching arteta with the ball is magic...aj and vic didnt look like they were in synch, but i think that in time (while vaughan is missing) that chemistry will come. patience pays...looking forward to spurs and hopefully some improved play. still, though, a happy opening day...COYB!

That's a symptom of having Neville and Cars in central midfield. Hopefully we'll see a more creative central midfield as Pienaar and Jags get integrated into the squad and when Cahill returns. I though Hibbert was our weakest player and was most responsible for their goal. He tries hard, and tackles well, but his distribution is woeful. Neville at RB is my hope.

Well with really five players not being able to play and chances are the same for tuesday against Spurs Moyes has to be a little careful and not disrupt the continuity of the team just yet. We really don't have any width to speak of at the moment. Siberski's goal was a Hibbo ball watching error. I wasn't to excited with our play at all but the main thing is we won by not playing our best so that bodes well.

Pienaar and Ossie look about the same in stature. Could see these two swop & change thru out the season. Anichebe worked hard and he puts the ball in the back of the net still looks good. Lescott was so close on a couple of occasions in the air. We will need to pick it up at White Hart lane Tuesday.
