Everton Youth Teams Thread

Everton u18s beat middlesbrough 2-1 for the 3rd home game in a row v them in the league and made it 7 straight home wins v boro, and go 2nd,behind top on GD,scorers-simms and Astley ? Next u18s game away to Blackburn as well next saturday with 11am ko
My mistake Everton u18s have 3 wins from 3 games lol o_O[won wolves 3-2 1st day-for some reason classed the 2-2 1st team draw as the result lol],
and are top 2 points above 2nd place with the chance to go 5 points in the lead for few hours next week

u18s Table

Everton 9 points from 3 games [beat wolves 3-2/Derby 2-1/today v boro 2-1]
Man utd 7 points from 3 games
Man city 6 points from 3 games
Liverpool 6 points from 3 games

Maybe a bit off topic but it does concern the youth teams and Academy
In his last press conference Brands stated he will now turn his attention to the Youth set up and the academy.
Seeing as though he has control over all footballing aspects of the clubs I wonder how far his influence will go and what his intentions are.
In Holland where he previously worked the Academies seemed to have a great record in providing players for the first team and spotting young players and developing them
Results were secondary and not the primary aim.
The lower leagues of English football are littered with FA youth cup winners and English under age internationals ,so as we have seen success at under age levels does not automatically mean that players will progress to the first team squad
In an ideal world 2 players per season progressing to the first team squad would be the norm
If we got one per season that would be fantastic and a dramatic improvement on our current set up.
1 every 2 years would at least give us 5/6 homegrown players in the squad every season and a base of players who may have some loyalty to the club
It would also attract other young academy recruits as they would see a way through to the first team.
With that being said will Brands make wholesale changes to the youth set up
Will he let go mist of the coaches (Unsworth included ) and bring in coaches he knows have a pedigree for getting youngsters ready for the first team squad
Will he overhaul the whole coaching setup from under 7 right through to under 23 and bring in his own men.
Will he change the scouting network and bring in more underage lads from abroad who he feels can make it.
Interesting times ahead for the Academy and I’d say there are more than a few employees looking nervously over their shoulder

I hope he doesn't go down the abroad route. Liverpool did this under Houllier and there is no coincidence that we have had such a large number of quality. locally born lads coming through the academy over the last 4/5 years.

Liverpool/Merseyside has always been a hotbed of young footballing talent and I think we should be looking at home first. More recently, a lot of the better local players have been snatched up by City, and Marcel somehow needs to reverse that trend.

I don't have a problem looking abroad for slightly older lads, maybe 14/15. By that stage we'll have a fair idea whether the local lads are going to be good enough, so we'll know which positions need strengthening and plan accordingly. We don't even need to look abroad. There is a lot of young talent in this country who would fit in much more quickly. We've had some success already with the likes of Stones, Holgate, Lookman and DCL and possibly Gibson too, all brought in for relatively low fees. But I'm talking about bringing them in maybe 2/3 years younger. Liverpool have done exceedingly well using this policy over recent years with the likes of Sterling, Ibes, Gomez and Brewster.

I wouldn't have an issue with an overhaul of the youth coaching staff, but only once they've had a really good look at them. Our academy has been pretty successful and we have a track record of bringing through grounded, technical players who are comfortable on the ball. We're not so prolific at bringing through flair players though. The academy needs to produce players that will fit into our system and our current stock of coaches need to be given a chance to show whether they are up to the task. If not, they need to go. And I include Unsy in this. There is an argument that our academy is full of "jobs for the boys" anyway, but I trust Marcel to sort things out.

I know what you're saying, but experience tells me that this is unlikely to be the case.

While I agree with a lot of your points it still leaves the point that at this present moment only Davies and Kenny have come through the ranks and neither are first team starters
I’d hope Brands will set up an Academy with a definite plan of action to ensure that we get a few players ready to step in to the first team as regulars and not just squad members
As you said we seem to be buying the ready made youths ( Stones Holgate GIBSON Henry rather than developing them ourselves

There's also Baningime and Dowell who will be in the squad this season. Possibly Williams too who has apparently impressed Silva.

On the periphery are the like of Robinson who is being primed as Baines' long term replacement, the versatile Connolly (still a regular in the national U21 squad) and Feeney is also expected to make the cut. I also still haven't lost hope in Anthony Evans either.

Take a look around at the other premier clubs and I reckon you'll be hard pushed to find as many in an around the first team and the same with regular starters (in a similar age group).

While it’s nice having them around the squad none of them are going to be regular starters when all the new signings are fit and up to speed.
To be honest I’ll be surprised if any of them with the exception of Robinson and JJK are still here in 3 yrs time
I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see a spot for any of them in our first 11

Kenny really? I think he'll need to improve massively if he's going to still be here in 3 years personally. He's showing no signs of getting past Coleman and by the end of the season he'll be 22. If he hasn't nailed down a place at full back - traditionally one of the 'easier' roles for young players - at that age I think you have to assume he never will.

I was a big fan of him from what i'd seen as a youngster but I have to say last year he looked like he was lacking in a few areas to ever be really good at the top level. He could improve, obviously, but I think he's currently way off.

Mate it’s more down to us having money than anything else. If a player from our academy can displace say a £35m Brazilian winger then we’d have seen him playing first team footie at 17. They’re not starters but it’s a squad game and the academy is far more prolific in my eyes than other PL clubs.

I’m not saying it’s not prolific I’m just saying we don’t seem to be producing players who are going to become first team regulars
Having said that not many of the top 6 have either
I suppose it’s a lack of patience and as you said having the money to buy the finished article

Its a squad game. Tip players wont spend half their time on the bench at a clyub our size. Most of our bench players will be made up of academy players, either these or new ones. Do you expect them to be refular starters at a young age.? I say again. Look around and you wont find another premier club with so many home grown.

I disagree a little. Frankly I think we should be buying players who can move the needle on our league position, but I have no problem promoting the youth into squad roles. I don't see the point of having expensive imports sitting around for 2/3 of the year in case you need them, and probably not happy to be in that situation. Whereas the local lads, Blues, would bite your hand off for the chance to be part of the first team setup and play part of the time while they continue to learn their craft. Every pound you don't spend on a homegrown player, either through transfer fee or wages, is a pound you can spend on a world class player if you can get them.

You also maintain a Scouse backbone to the club, in the locker room, and connection with the fans. And if you get lucky, one or two of them are good enough to be one of the first 11 on the team sheet.
