Everton Youth Teams Thread

Two good centre forward goals and a pen. I like my strikers to take pens.

For a big lad he has good technique. I like him. he could develop into the sort of Plan B player you need to introduce from the bench or play from the start against teams that park the bus.

..I like my CFs to take penalties as well Fred, they should be goalscorers and it’s a way of ticking the tally over.

..delighted for Fraser Hornby. Keep banging in the goals, Matey, it’s a great habit to have.
It’s the one area of the team we are desperately lacking in numbers and quality. Maybe this season is too early for him, but he has every chance of making the bench next season at some point if he carries on scoring and developing at the rate he has.

..like DCL, though, he’s not looked an out and out goalscorers to me. Prolific goalscorers tend to be prolific goalscorers at schoolboy and youth levels. He’s a big old unit and full of promise.

Yeh he's hardly been prolific for the u23s, in fact he's been a bit disappointing in terms of goals since moving up for U18s. Hopefully that hat trick can give him a kick start

Eggs I think he started off as a midfield player, then converted to a striker, didn't he play in the Europa cup last season in
one of the last games when we couldn't qualify even if we won, still very young, think we signed him from Northampton
Town.

..yep, very good point reminding that he hasn’t always been a striker. We did sign him from the Cobblers.

Indeed , first time I saw him was clips playing as a tall midfielder for Scotlandu17s , that was at least 2 1/2 years ago , so I think it’s only been about 1 1/2 years that Paul Tait decided to move him up to striker. With his height that may have been an obvious move, but they could have moved him back to become a ball playing centre back, so assume it was a skill based decision I.e. he’s got the skill just needs to develop the striker’s instinct to become prolific. His goals showed good movement to find space in the box and score , so that aspect is coming into his game. He’s also got the confidence to grab the ball for the penalty.
In my paper Scott Gemill (u21 Manager)is singing his praises “ I think you can see a young player starting to emerge and develop all the time” , and references the good Toulon tournament he had. Also “ He’s got that physicality which is important but Fraseris not just about that. It’s about intelligence , a willingness to work and the talent as well....you need the full package but he is definitely on schedule.”
He’s 19 next week , so very early days and let’s face it Andorra u21 are not as good as most PL 2 U23s teams, so he does need to start upping his strike rate in PL2 .

..like DCL, I see him concentrating to get on the end of things whereas goalscorers are working out what they’ll do when they get on the end of something. It’s having the picture in your mind of where the keeper and goal posts are. It’s being one frame ahead.

Last season in a game at Goodison the RB played a brilliant ball behind the back four that Hornby burst a gut to get on the end of, but it was all about reaching the ball rather than getting it beyond the keeper. It’s the type of situation I would hope the coaches are working on.

True but players like Delial Brewster were prolific at youth level and look at them now.
But Brewster only scored at u18 level against players his own age and never played for the u21/23 s, Hornby was playing and scoring at U23s last season and is playing against older players for our U23s and Scotland u21 . Playing up an age doesn’t prove he’s going to make it of course , but it’s a good pointer of those in with a chance .

Oh yeh I think he’ll make it, that wasn’t what I was saying.
