Everton Youth Teams Thread

Oh yeh I think he’ll make it, that wasn’t what I was saying.
Wouldn't.be at all surprised if he moved back to midfield at some point , few times I caught him playing there looked really comfortable, with his size , touch , think his future may be back in his original position,
Lots of teams seem to play with a big fella in the middle these days, hope it works out for him wherever he ends up on the pitch.

Indeed , first time I saw him was clips playing as a tall midfielder for Scotlandu17s , that was at least 2 1/2 years ago , so I think it’s only been about 1 1/2 years that Paul Tait decided to move him up to striker. With his height that may have been an obvious move, but they could have moved him back to become a ball playing centre back, so assume it was a skill based decision I.e. he’s got the skill just needs to develop the striker’s instinct to become prolific. His goals showed good movement to find space in the box and score , so that aspect is coming into his game. He’s also got the confidence to grab the ball for the penalty.
In my paper Scott Gemill (u21 Manager)is singing his praises “ I think you can see a young player starting to emerge and develop all the time” , and references the good Toulon tournament he had. Also “ He’s got that physicality which is important but Fraseris not just about that. It’s about intelligence , a willingness to work and the talent as well....you need the full package but he is definitely on schedule.”
He’s 19 next week , so very early days and let’s face it Andorra u21 are not as good as most PL 2 U23s teams, so he does need to start upping his strike rate in PL2 .
..like DCL, I see him concentrating to get on the end of things whereas goalscorers are working out what they’ll do when they get on the end of something. It’s having the picture in your mind of where the keeper and goal posts are. It’s being one frame ahead.

Last season in a game at Goodison the RB played a brilliant ball behind the back four that Hornby burst a gut to get on the end of, but it was all about reaching the ball rather than getting it beyond the keeper. It’s the type of situation I would hope the coaches are working on.

Have only seen him in clips but from posts in here it seems that hes a tall chap who can hold the ball up + score goals (infrequently)..

Any similarities to Ferguson?

In any case, always good to have a big forward in the squad, even if not a top performer...to put on when were chasing games.

Got badly beaten for the first goal but did some good things too. He's obviously s work in progress but invaluable experience playing for the US against the likes of France and Brazil that can only help the lad.

Thats the key, playing in the championship may be his current level but he will only improve when seeing the standard he has to reach to compete against the worlds best.

Will be interesting to see how much hes improved by the end of the season.

..much stockier than Ferguson. Hornby is thick set and tall. He played in one of the EL games last season and won plenty of flick ons (I think Vlasic scored from one).

Everton youngster looking to impress at Goodison after netting international hat-trick
By Darren Johnstone -

September 7, 2018

Scotland Under-21 striker Fraser Hornby caught national team boss Alex McLeish’s attention with a stunning hat-trick, but admits it is his Everton manager that he needs to impress first.

The 18-year-old scored all the goals as Scot Gemmill’s side breathed fresh life into their Euro 2019 qualifying campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Andorra on Thursday evening.
McLeish was an interested observer at Tynecastle and although Hornby did his long-term international prospects no harm, the teenager recognises that his first task is to become a recognised member of the Toffees team.

An 82 minute run out against Apollon Limassol in the Europa League last July under then boss Sam Allardyce remains his only outing in a Blues jersey but he remains hopeful of forcing his way into Marco Silva’s plans.

Hornby, whose contract at Goodison runs until summer 2021, said: “Hopefully I can get a few appearances for the first team at Everton, if not then I’ll be happy to go out on loan somewhere.

“I’ve not really had a chat with anyone about my future at Everton, I’ve kept my head down and I’m taking each day as it comes and working hard.
“I’m feeling good and hopefully I can get a few chances in the first team.
“I’m working hard everyday and I’m doing the best I can do. If I perform well then I’ll get the chance.”
McLeish congratulated the players in person in the changing room after the game and Hornby hopes he has left a lasting impression.

He added: “It’s good to have the first team manager at the game and hopefully I impressed him.
“It’s an amazing feeling to score a hat-trick in any game. I’ve scored some for Everton but it’s my first hat-trick for Scotland so it made it extra special.
“It’s still a fairly new position for me so I’m still learning and hopefully I can keep getting better and better.
“They made it really difficult for us in the first half, they were sat deep but we knew the chances would come. I wasn’t getting frustrated because with the quality in our team I knew we would get chances.”

The under-21s now travel to Arnhem needing to beat the Netherlands, whom their trail by a point with three games left, on Tuesday if they are to have any chance of landing a Group 4 play-off spot.
Having already beaten the Dutch earlier in the campaign and overcome France at this summer’s Toulon Tournament, Hornby insists the Scottish youngsters fear no-one.
He added: “It’s a really tough group but with the quality we’ve got in our squad I don’t see why we can’t go to Holland and beat them.

“We can’t beat anyone on our day, France, Holland – we were unlucky against England. We’ve got great quality and are capable of beating anyone.
“There is always a chance, if we keep playing the way we have been and winning games, I don’t see why we can’t qualify.”
