Everton Youth Teams Thread

I watched a dodgy feed with no sound of Latvia u21 v England u21 , missed a few bits but caught most of it , 2-1 to England. I missed the start and had a hard time figuring out the formation at times. Kenny at right back, Dowell left midfield , Mount was right side, Davies in the middle, Lookman left wing . It was difficult to see the numbers and identify players at times.

It was a pretty poor game, affected by wind , a poor pitch and really not a lot of class shown. Lookman was barely in the game, his crosses were rarely effective and he was replaced on the left by Sessegnon in the second half. Kenny on the other hand did get a few decent crosses in and looked pretty sound if unspectacular at “ right back” , though at times I wondered if they were playing a three at the back. Dowell played mainly left side midfield , moved about a bit and had some nice flicks. His had the short pass to Mount who crossed for Abraham to head the equalising goal at 1-1.

Davies had the best game of our five. He played deeper and in the middle of the pitch, the kind of role Lewis Cook plays usually. He did well considering he was the only one infront of the defence, he was the main one picking up the ball from defence , moving it forward , passing it short for others and got forward a lot. He was involved in the winning goal, picking up the ball in the middle, passing onto Solanke who found Mount who fired in from the right with a good finish to one of the few decent passing moves. As ever there was the one. “ ‘sakeTom!” pass but he wasn’t alone in that. Overall he had a decent game I thought.
DCL came on for Abraham at about 80 mins but five minutes later he had to go off after a clash with what looked like a knock to the head - no visible wound but they appeared to be doing a head injury assessment on him.

I thought the left side was very poor with Lookman (very conservative) and Walker-Peters (dreadful passing and positioning). Kenny was suddenly galvanised into attacking form after a while - I wonder if it was an instruction from the bench. He combined well with Mount and Davies on occasion and trusted Davies to get back and cover for him if necessary.

Despite the wayward passing - and, as you say, it may well have been the pitch - Davies did look one of the most 'professional' on the pitch. You can see the effect that the confidence brought from playing in the first team has had on him and, to a lesser extent, Kenny. (And, although not in this game, Calvert-Lewin.)

Dowell and Lookman I thought should have been doing more of the kind of stuff Mount was - in other words, making a good impression against Latvian youth players. On the other hand, I thought some of the heralded youngsters from the 'top' clubs were worse: disinterested and useless.

At first, I thought Calvert-Lewin had got poked in the eye. He got caught by a swinging elbow and then shoved - hopefully it isn't a concussion.
