Everton Youth Teams Thread

You don't get many 18 year olds involved at under 21's though do you mate? I'd say he'd be close to the 19's though.

..absolutely, although the very exceptional ones (Rooney, Owen) can go straight into the full international side. Regarding Hornby, I just thought it was a point worth making and as @blueloon says, sometimes playing for other home nations can benefit the profile of a youngster.

Hornby can't go out on loan until January at the earliest mate, so by that time we're probably talking a couple of month difference in age between the 3 I mentioned. Bit nit picking really.

As I said, it depends on how he does for the U23s and Scotland u21s between now and then. If he continues to do well and has stayed injury free, the club may decide he's ready for a loan. If they do, I'm pretty sure we will find suitors for him. Not sure Chelsea have that much a higher profile than us as you think either.

Don't know enough about the SPL to comment really. What makes you think a loan there would be better for him?

They would still be a year ahead of him in development terms due to the age group they become a scholar.

Exactly the same process as somebody being born in august a whole school year above someone born in september

And chelsea definatly have a better "pull" to loan there players out. Teams see it as an opportunity to
1) Get an in with a top 6 team
2) Possibly get hold of some of the best talent around and the profile that player brings based on him coming from chelsea

The hatrick was against Andorra while the brace was against Holland. I treat the brace more seriously. Sometimes you look at the opposition too.

He is a late developer to the role but seems to be improving steadily.

..although I don’t see him having a lot of pace, he appears to have all the ammunition from a size and strength perspective. I suspect coaches have looked at that and decided he could have the greatest impact as a CF (as opposed to the midfielder he was earlier in his youth team days).

The first goal against the Dutch showed real composure in what was a pressure game and situation. Very encouraging.

His development was fascinating really. He was ok at Central midfield, recognised at international level, looked neat and tidy. He then played the Fellaini role as a 10 and we went quite direct to him. Someone obviously saw him as a number 9 and he has kicked on again.

He reminds me a bit of Fellaini really, I always thought he'd make a good target man.

I do wonder if someone at academy level looked at saw the number of talented central midfielders we have and just thought it would be a far better route to move him down the centre forward line? There is Davies and Banningime in the first team. You have Williams and even Connolly who can play there below that> This season you also have Carrol who looks a talented player.

I know Liverpool did similar with Arnold. He was an ordinary central midfield player and they could see they needed a right back so converted him.

..it definitely happens that clubs re-evaluate individuals if they think they might not quite have it to make the breakthrough in their usual position. I do mention quite a bit how many full-backs started life as wingers. Tony Hibbert was a central midfielder in a very successful Everton youth team.

Yes it certainly happens and is a big plus when it works out.

What I like about Hornby is he looks like he knows how to use his power and height. Maybe he will grow another inch or two, but he will certainly fill out. He made a lot of good runs in the first team game he had, took up good positions and attacked the ball well.

I compare him to a lad like Evans, who as yet doesn't seem to know how to use his height. Hopefully he can learn.

..different types, though, aren’t they? As you said, Hornby looks the classic target man whereas Evans is not a back to goal type. In that EL game he played, Hornby won virtually every flick on and it was only Vlasic who exploited that to get on the end of one for his goal. For some reason, Evans has always reminded me of Mick Channon with similar running power.

Think I'm going to go down and watch the U23's on Monday night. Been told it's at Loughborough University Stadium, £3 cash on the door. Don't worry I'm not a super fan, I live in Nottingham so it's only half an hour or so away.

You know at this age, it's not a bad thing to play in different roles. AMs and CF's tend to move up or back a lot of times anyway. Ronaldo was a winger in his teens and now he's a CF. Rooney played both and moved back later in his career. I'm a believer that playing different positions helps develop total pitch awareness and football IQ. Understanding how everything connects rather just the silo of a specific role.
