Everton Youth Teams Thread

I think you’re right there Fred
Brands will want a shake up of the academy and a system of coaching that reflects the first team style of play to allow a pathway to the first team
I can see a few coaches getting replaced and possibly by foreign coaches
Not sure how Brexit will affect this though
As far as I'm aware there's no restriction on foreign coaches. They'll just need to apply for a work permit the same as any other job.

I was disappointed at the approach to the Checkatrade. They quite often have played weakened teams when I would have gone full strength as these games were against seasoned professionals. They even made sure the fixtures didn't clash with internationals for this to be possible. I think like the 1st team squad the u23 is too big and will be reduced in the summer.

Agreed Mick. I know we were top but it's been turgid watching the U23s this season.

I used to be a big fan of Unsy but I've been steadily going off him for a good while now. Think we'll see a big shake up of the academy in the summer. Sounds daft seeing as we are doing so well, but I think Brands will want to put his own stamp on it.
Yes there is definitely a staleness about the squad and the way they play, even when we beat Spurs 6-0 there wasn't
really anything to get excited about, yesterday was woeful and we never looked like getting anything from the game, and not many of the players seemed to be upset at losing, and this was a Derby game.

I’m more confused they’re not playing the same system as the first team.

Maybe he's meant to be.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's playing "winning football" to get his profile up for when he leaves. Personally I don't think that's doing much for the development of the players. Young Gordon especially seems to be in limbo. Not part of the U18 set up now and getting hardly any game time with the U23s. No wonder the vultures are circling.

The big difference is that the first team had five “new” players starting on Saturday who have all done really well. The U23s is virtually the same players who were around last season, the two decent players who moved up from u18 , Denny and Hornby , have been injured , Gordon has rarely started and we’ve never seemed to have a settled side or the same U23s team two games in a row. By contrast in the u18s the same three attackers and four midfielders have between them occupied all the front 6 spots in virtually all games. Consistentency helps and It rarely seems to work when we bring back the likes of Dowell , they don’t seem to integrate quick enough.

There’s an argument that Unsworth is doing a decent job, getting the best out of some pretty average players and keeping them at the top of the league. The problem for me is that his strengths have always been in organising the defence and defensive mid field. You could send Browning, Feeney out on loan and he’d still put a decent defense together. But we’ve never been an attractive attacking side which scores lots of goals in all his years. While we haven’t had any prolific goalscorers at U23s for years, with the individual talent we’ve seen at times from the likes of Bowler, Gordon and Evans we should be fashioning them into a more attractive attacking team.
As ever at this level it will be a season of two halves, with people moving out on loan come January and hopefully soon some of the promising u18s getting a chance.,

Like all players though, you have to prove you deserve a place in the team. He hasn't really shone in any of his games with the senior side, and if he can't show that he's better than under 23 level then he'll never get out of it. He has an awful lot of excuses made for him does Dowell.
Couldn't agree more, he has ability no question, but he needs to be imposing himself on games, rather than drifting through like yesterday, he hasn't really developed much more from three years ago to me.

I think that’s where a good DOF will come in to play
I can see Brands moving u18s up when they are ready and Brands telling the U23 manager to give the player a good run of games in a certain position to see how he gets on
At that age it should be about creating a pathway to the first team for those that are ready and accelerating that pathway for those that show exceptional promise

Can't understand why people indulge Dowell so much he is not good enough he needs to move down a level or 2.

I think they are hoping for a home grown player to come through and be a star. I agree he needs to drop down a level but I also think there could be a player there just needs to find a position. He gets used at right wing, behind the striker and in midfield. All these require different skull sets and he's of an age where he needs to start delivering and not be in a learning phase. Go out on loan to Championship side where he'll get regular games and see how it goes until end of season. Being 9th choice for the 4 forward positions means he's going to see very little game time. He seems disinterested when playing for u23 so it's the only solution I can see.
