Everton Youth Teams Thread

Everton u18s will play Wigan Athletic or Irlam or Notts County in the 3rd round of the FA Youth Cup
All 3rd round ties must be played by Saturday 12 December
Irlam FC v Notts County was due to be played 10 days ago but called off due to waterlogged pitch, it now seems Irlam have to do the Lockdown so going to be a big delay to whenever Everton play play 3rd round it seems like, Everton actually signed a 14 year old from Irlam in last few days

Yep, we play the u17s in the premier league cup in 3rd game of the group which should be in Jan as well-our 2nd game should come v man utd in around 2 weeks [if its all ok]

Their u17s can challenge anyone in the country.

Their current u17s made the floodlit cup final as u15s, being the best team in the north. Basically the national cup for u15s, before going edged out by Palace who are now tearing it up with that team as a cat 1 club at u18 level.

Wigan u18 are completely dominating at cat 2 level, did well in the FAYC last year and have beaten United in our group of the PL cup already this season.

It’s an extremely tough draw.

Yep, caught the floodlit cup stuff, not very much of it but have seen little clips as well as the odd score here and there- and yes wigan beat man utd 3-2 in our group same day we beat Burnley 3-1

Thanks , that’s very encouraging about Wigan given what they’ve endured and it’s nice to see aCat2 club doing well , though hopefully not too well in the FAYC where “ last season” was back to the usual City/Chelsea dominance.

Everton's Academy transfer ban has now been lifted.

The Blues were hit with two year recruitment sanctions in 2018 after being found guilty of making illegal approaches to young players.

Everton were also fined £500,000.

The ban said the club were unable to sign any player “who has been registered with another Premier League or EFL club in the preceding 18 months” for two years.

But those sanctions have now elapsed and the Blues are able to begin recruiting players for their Academy sides in the usual way.

Everton admitted an allegation that Academy staff had “offered inducements to a player and his family to encourage the player to register with the club”.

And a club investigation then found that Everton were guilty of breaking similar recruitment rules with another six players.

The Premier League would then confirm that the Blues had previously provided false information when asked about how certain players had become registered with the Academy.

Marcel Brands has been undertaking a revamp of the club's Academy and has made a number of key appointments this year, including promoting David Unsworth to Director of Academy.

It's the way to go really (in my eyes). Obviously you're getting 100 for that 1 but it's a chance you have to take.
We clearly need a good U18s team , but if we take the opposite view, we take on 10-14 ish per season , even of the ones who get pro contracts maybe only 5 per season make it to regular u23 games. Then maybe 1 in 5 to the 1st team.
This year we've brought in Branthwaite , Nkounkou , Jagne initially as u23s and at a cost of about £2mill total. Other recent successes , DCL, Holgate , Stones , were bought cheaply as I think teenagers , with a little bit of experience. Even the comparative failures like Markelo and Adeniran established themselves at U23s and seem to be capable of making careers at a lower level. Very few 16 year olds we have bought in , both foreign and domestic , seem to make it through to our U23s , Iversen springs to mind. They would of course be cheaper

To achieve the level of u18 dominance Chelsea and City achieved in recent years , year in year out , took time , money and a targeted approach not easy and I can’t see us going to the same levels as they did, maybe we will have a good year coming through then fall back again and then mixed in with a specific approach at U23s to targeting players and positions. It will indeed be interesting to see if we do go out now and recruit more at the u16 level , if Brands focuses on the U23s or mix of both.

....interesting if the changes to the Academy (Unsworth, Ebbrell) and the Brands contract situation is part of a long-term strategy.

To me it's essential we try and improve on our academy at the lower levels (not that we have bad academy teams of course) and it's mostly down to cost. The more players we can develop and not even necessarily use, just sell on, really helps off-set the sort of spending/wages that comes with first team recruitment.

What's interesting with City/Chelsea though, (particularly City really) is how few players they bring through. It's an interesting quirk. United bring more players through.
